This may be a silly question but perhaps one day my son will ask me this. I am just curious why Santa Clause wears in red? Are there any reasons to it?

the current santa was (i think) developed by the coca cola company way back in the teens and 20's of the 20th century and their company packaging is red and white so perhaps that is why.

That's a very interesting question! I know some of the older images of santa don't always wear red, and are slim! But I don't know why he now wears red.. I'll have to read other responses to this and see if anyone else knows!

Certainly not a silly question and I think you are good to be prepared in case your son asks, so if he does you will be able to remember the responses you got! Red is easy to see and will stand out against the white snow! I will have to read your other responses because I would like to know too now you have asked the question. I am sure there is a logical reason behind it. And why does Santa have to be male? Mother Nature, Mother Christmas. Hmmm food for thought there.

there's quite some number of reasons. if you look at the older images, his clothes varies a lot more. sometimes red, but more often brown or green. red and white together are very symbolic colours. red and white ribbons on a maypole represent the union between male and female. red and white can also be thought to represent sacrificial blood on the snow, as explored further in the Pratchett Christmas story, The Hogfather. it's also considered to represent the red and white caps of hallucinogenic toadstools. and of course there's the Coca Cola theory too. I think that the truth is a little bit of all of those.

What an interesting history about Santa Clause. I don't know that his clothes changed as time goes by.

Santa may wear red because back in 1950's everything was neutral and TV were black and white and when this TV show came on it was in color. Red is eye catching and draws you in not away. The coloring for white hair is red will not affect it at all. Chrildren may see red as warm, fire engines, fast cars, heat and that draws them in. I hope this helps. Sincerely Unique16

No this is not a silly question. I looked it up and it is said that Santa say the richest man in tow wear a red suit so he had the same seamstress to make him one and then it suggested this site http://answers.com/society/holidays/why_does_santa_

I always thought it was for two reasons. First, if he was going through an area where people would hunt for their meals they would see him in red and know he wasn't to be shot for dinner. (kind of like people who go out duck or deer hunting wear orange vests so other hunters know that they aren't a duck or deer and shoot them.) The other reason was that Santa loves hamburgers and French fries with plenty of ketchup and the ketchup would blend in with the outfit if he dribbled some on his suit. I heard in Sunday school that the red of Santa's suit is symbolic of the blood that Christ shed for us on the cross the white is symbolic of the purity of the Christ child and the pure life he led throughout his travels, teaching and life. It has been said Santa is symbolic of the wise men that brought the gifts to the Christ child and he brings gifts to all the children of the world in remembrance of the birth of the Christ child and reminding us all of the reason for Christmas.
