Instant or from Scratch

I was listening to the radio and they were saying how women now a days do not know how to cook like before. Like how to make Sunday dinners and everything from scratch. Everything is instant now so women take the easy way out. Personally, my mom cooked but not a lot because we were on different schedules but now that I have my own place I experiment and make food which I think is good. What do you think?

I cook nearly everything from scratch, but I grew up in an era where that's just what one did. For the most part, I don't care for convenience foods. They seem flavorless or fake a lot of the time and they don't set well with my tummy. That's probably because I'm not used to eating them. I know that a lot of people use instant or convenience foods all the time and I can't believe that it's healthy.

Hi Flirtykumquat! As for me, I don't have much of my time to spare just for cooking. After all, I lived by myself for now. But I can't agree to the radio you listened to, I know how to cook but just couldn't have enough time for cooking. Women must learn how to cook, so that in time, when we already had our own family, we know how to make our family happy by doing things the women are expected to do, like cooking.

I like to think that I can cook well. I don't know a lot from scratch, but I can fry with the best of them, and the things I do know from scratch are great. I can also "doctor up" a lot of foods that you may buy instant or out of the can, so when I am finished you would think they are homemade. But I do agree, this world of all these instant and ready made foods, more and more people are getting lazy and buying these foods as a cop out, rather than to take the time to learn how to make a wholesome homecooked meal.

I'm always cooking/baking something from scratch. It's fun to try to come up with new recipes and it keeps the kids eating things they wouldn't normally try. Just yesterday morning I made breakfast ravioli (YUM). The kids loved it. I also think that the preservatives in the instant stuff is a primary cause of obesity and digestive issues. My son has had stomach trouble for years, and since I started cooking/baking from scratch, he doesn't have nearly as many issues. Of course they also seem very small for their ages, they're in the bottom 15% of their age-range compared to other kids. But they're happy and healthy, and they love being in the kitchen and helping. They are both also straight A students, which I like to accredit to them being able to be in the kitchen helping, because it helps with science and math, plus you can give them the history on where the recipe came from.

I love to cook so i allwayskeep on trying new recipies, and as per the answer to your question is that whenever i have enough time and my menu is preset then i go from scratch i.e. making each and everything by myself but if i am ih hurry or tired then i go for the instant one..But yes personally i like to make frej food as it tastes good and is also healthy as it does not contain any preservatives unlike the instant ones...

My opinion is to try to cook our own meals which are healthier. I do not like ready made foods and i always cook no matter how busy i am, i try to find time to cook. I think that it is a matter of lazyness and not time.I agree with you that now women do not cook much and they find more convinient with ready made foods. I believe that cooking is a matter of survival and that everyone, even men, should learn cooking because it is a matter of healthier life. So keep up with making your own cooking, it is for your benefit.

i really dont like cooking that much so i tend to take the easy way too but you are right, they just dont know how to cook like they used to. i am reading a book on the great depression and when they were able to eat, they did everything from scratch.

I guess I am a bit old fashion. I enjoy baking and cooking, and if I can make it from scratch, I will. I love making homemade pasta, breads, well everything. I don't think making foods from instant is the easy way, but to do it from scratch, you just have to have a passion for it. As long as any meal is prepared with love and is well received by those eating it, I don't think it matters if it is homemade or from a box.

I really admire what my mom did especally for holidays...now days we order the pie and like you said it's all instant....dressing.....mashed potatoes.....it's just minutes away from a great meal. There are many things I do like making from scratch..like soups.

Well last night i didnt make much from scratch and usually we do at my house but last night was fast and just a pretty easy dinner. Lasts night i did make some bread crumbs out of croutons and used the last of the bread crumbs and then put them onto some pork chops and they tasted so good last night and then i had a bag of some vegetables in the freezer so i just put them in a frying pan with some olive oil and cooked them up last night since i didnt have any fresh vegetables to use and then we had a box of istant mashed potatoes and i used that as well and then some bread that was made we ate. It was an easy dinner and fast and quick and over like that. Im not a fan of eating the frozen vegetables but from time to time its a good thing to eat them when u dont want to stand and cut some vegetables up and at least there still vegetables. I do like to cook and like to experiment with different things as well. I do like cutting up chicken that is left over and have some chicken pasta as that is really cook with some fresh garlic and mushrooms. Hmm yummy. I cant wait for my dinner tonight.

When you become a wife, a longing to really know how to cook emerges. That's because as a woman, we know that a way to the man's heart is through his stomach. And as wives, we want our husband and children to like our cooking. Hence, we try to learn how to cook by ourselves, with the aid of cookbooks.

men and women alike are very busy nowadays. Unlike in the remote past, most of our grandmothers and great great grandmothers were just home-stay mom who were in-charge of doing all the chores and stuff including cooking. I guess that is among the reason why women in the past are great cook. Unlike in our generation, women also bring money to the family and work hard to build a good career, so I guess when they get home they just wanted to have an easy to cook dinner. But given the availability in terms of time, I guess women by nature would love to cook and take care of their families.

Everything is instant now. There is nothing wrong about it. It just make things easier. But i still prefer, cooking just like the way before. I love preparing the ingredients. Instant food are much more convenient that why a lot people like it. Good thing you cook your own food. You can experiment and try to cook different dishes.
