Tomorrow we observe the birthday of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King spent his life working for the freedom and equality of all people, regardless of race. Has Dr. King's dream become a reality? Why or why not?

I think things have improved, but, we have a long way to go. I'm not just talking about African Americans, it's all Americans who are a "minority". We are human, and no matter how much people want to brag about them not being prejudice, I think we all have a little inside us, whether we're completely aware of it or not. We still buy into the stereotypes of certain races and religions, and unfortunately, I don't think that's going to change in my lifetime.

Dear bonbon664, Yes, we must quit buying into negative stereotypes. Sadly, this is easier said than done.

That is rather an interesting question and Dr. King's dream was always going to be a noble one. Although perhaps not an interesting one. There is really no sugarcoating it, we have equality in some ways, but people are not treated equal in other ways. There are still a lot of times where various races are not treated equal, given their skin color. Freedom and equality, something that I think that many wish will happen. But will never be one hundred percent. I think that there is a change where things are much better off than they were about fifty or so years ago, but inequality comes in many forms, as we are seeing in the world today. It is sad to know that Martin Luther King Jr's dream is only just that. Idealistic thoughts for sure, but as we venture into the real world, the wheels fall off the wagon. There will always be bad feelings at a racial level, and for some people, they don't know why.

Dear Matt, You are so right. While we have certainly progressed in terms of achieving true equality, we still have a long way to go.

I think it has to an extent, but there is still a lot of work to be done and only we humans can do it, we all have to treat each other better, we all only have one life and we all deserve to be happy.

Hi MandaLee, The world is certainly a much better place today because of people like Dr. Martin Luther King, but there is still a lot of work to be done. There are still many people who think that the white race is superior to others, and it baffles my mind as to why. Dr. King's fight had to do with race, others must continue to fight for equality for others. Blessings.

I would say it's starting to, just the fact that we have a black president shows a great step forward.

No pity enough it has not. We all speak about equality but still, everywhere on the world there is no equality at all. Women are still worth less and abused. People with different believes fight their holy wars. People with different skin colour, different races, different opinions are still discriminated. In many countries the hate against other races/foreigners are blooming. Fact is: we only like what we know and during bad times (economics) we love to blame those who are different from us.

We've really come an awful long way but considering the amount of time that has passed, it's a slow progress. I think that if he were still here, he'd still be out there pushing for equality and peace etc. along with many others. It's not as bad as it was but we still have a ways to go. I have to add...it's not just the white people that discriminate. It's worldwide.

Hi Sid, Yes, progress is quite slow. I also agree with you that discrimination remains a major problem worldwide.

I think Martin Luther King Jr's dream is still a work in progress. Which is great! Alot of the dream has happen don't get me wrong! I am trying to say is the job will never be done! Blacks are still,at times, discriminated to this day. Same with woman. Gays are still being discriminated against and that is a huge hurdle! So as you can see MLK's work is still ongoing.

I think, we man say to some it has. The sad thing is, some people who are in power or having a position in the government are the one who violates this equality thing. Some of them being in power believes that they should have an edge on everything. So, as long as greediness is on these people, equality will never be achieved.

I believe martin luther king serves his purpose in his life. It became a reality to all the people who live their lives according to his examples.. Not for all it happens but for some it makes sense and turned it into reality.

Dr. King's dream has not yet become a reality. There is still alot of hate and prejudice in the world. We have a long way to go in order for Dr. King's dream to become a reality. I still think that Dr. King's dream can come true, but I don't know if that will happen in my lifetime.
