A lot of sites are going dark today, such as Wikipedia, to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act. This is because, while piracy of intellectual property should remain illegal, the SOPA will also seriously infringe on free speech, parody laws, etc. Opinions?

I have been hearing about SOPA and a related bill named something like PIPPA. I have been meaning to look into them but have not found the time. I am aware that some sites are really unhappy with these bills. I have been hearing some on the TV news today. A commentator on Fox News was expressing his opinion that these bills are going too far and that they will infringe on "rights". I need to learn more.

Well, it's true when said that it's going to far. I agree that people shouldn't be pirating software, and hell, I know many many people do even if they say they don't. If The Pirate Bay and other sites like it would be shut down, then we wouldn't even be having to Strike against these bills.

I am not from US, so I don't have much info about the bill. Anyway, some of the sites I use mailed me to support the protest. (Unfortunately, my 'congressman' has no say in it!) So, I come to know that it is an attack on free speech and so, while the said purpose is not going to be implemented. I would like to know more e.g. how it's an attack, and why are you saying it will not stop the piracy? I have quite an issue with the so-called 'freedom of speech' but let's not confuse the issue before getting the whole detail. By the way, I read Twitter called the Wiki move a 'foolish' act. Amazing site!

Oh, Twitter is opposing the SOPA.... maybe it will use some 'wiser' mode to express itself!
