Do things seem to hit you hardest right before taxes?

Each year it never fails, the month leading up to tax returns is always the hardest. Every year thus far we've had serious car troubles just before we expected our taxes back. The bad thing about it is there were times when our cars were so bad off we were actually left without a vehicle at all for awhile until we got the money to replace it. Some years it's more than just the cars too. There always manages to be something big breaking down on us weeks before we're expecting our tax returns, leaving us to wait until we get the returns to do anything about it. I know it could be worse. These things could be happening when we're not expecting any money, then we have to scramble to figure out a way to fix it. But still.. it's a pain because we always have other plans for our tax money. This year we wanted to put most of our tax money towards the house. We need so many repairs. We need a new kitchen floor, drywall in every room, paint, duct work.. the list never ends. We've known we needed a few minor car repairs. I need a new wheel bearing on my van, hubby needs breaks, things like that, nothing major. But then a few days ago hubby scraped the bottom of my van while pulling into the steep driveway, and boom, there goes my muffler! It's dragging and scraping and the car is loud! I wasn't planning on buying a new car, just fixing mine up.. but due to the cost of a new exhaust system as well as everything else that's wrong with my car, it is best to just junk it and get myself a new one. To make matters worse.. yesterday I came home to a freezing cold house! The heat didn't work so great in here in the first place. Only 3 rooms actually get heat, and thankfully 2 of those rooms are kid's bedrooms.. we use space heaters in the other bedrooms, so the only really cold rooms of the house are the dining room (which we're still using as a living room because we haven't cleaned the real living room out.. need a dumpster!) and the kitchen. The bathroom gets some heat from one of the bedrooms. But yesterday, there was cold air blowing out of the vents. Hubby worked on it for awhile, even went and bought a new thermostat, but there's still cold air coming from the vents. So now we need to get a repair guy in to see if we can get it fixed, and pray we don't need a new furnace! Thankfully all of our W-2's are in and I filed our taxes yesterday and we should be getting our money soon.. but this is just money I didn't want to have to spend! Like I said, I'm glad it's happening now as opposed to after all our tax money has been spent.. but still, I'd much rather these sorts of things not happen at all so I can spend the money as I had planned originally!

my taxes are deducted by my employer so I do not have to file anything. However, as I always have a story, I can tell you something. Every year on the farm in about November or Decemebr we had a vehicle problem. Not a ,little problem but a huge gigantic and sometimes spectacular problem. Whether it has been a good year financially without any hurricanes or wind storms or whether a bad financial yes, there would always be an accident. A tractor breaking down to my husband, in our Mercedes, falling asleep at the wheel and doing a swan dive over a precipice. Always something and guess what? if any of us in the family have a car problem ou get your last dollar that it will be in November or December. having said that, I do sympathise with you. We make our plans Kat - then something called life just gets in the way. Hope you get it sorted out soon

OMG, he fell asleep at the wheel? Was he hurt bad? If not, I'm sure you gave him heck when he got home!! My husband fell asleep in the car once.. but thankfully it happened when he was at home parked in the driveway, LOL. It was Christmas time and he was very sick, but as usual put his shopping off till the last minute. Though he was sick and should have been in bed, he needed to go out to do his shopping. He was gone for hours and hours, and I was getting worried. When he finally came in he said he'd been sitting in the car, with it running, and had fallen asleep, and was out there sleeping for like 4 hours! Even after that he still hasn't learned to get his shopping done sooner. This year he finished it on Christmas Eve again, though thankfully wasn't sick this time.

It is really surprising he survived that crash!

The road he was driving on is called 'The Devil's Race Course'. Full of curves and bends with a precipice one side. So over he goes - fast asleep- and the car lodged between a little wooden house down the precipice. They had built (for safety) an outside kitchen so if the kitchen caught fire then the house would not be burnt out. And the car lands between - wedged nicely - between the house and the outside kitchen with the nose jammed down in the ground the tail of the car sticking upright. I did not laugh at the time when he arrived home after hitching a ride to the nearest village about 2 am in the morning and we never got another Benz as things went downhill after that. But I did have a little taste of luxury for a few years)

I understand. This happens to my husband and I every single year! This year my husband has a couple of outstanding tickets that he got at his last job because he was driving a truck the boss told him to drive without a CDL. Were trying to get our own place and get all our stuff out of storage in another state. And our car isn't doing too good either... So much for a vacation for our 8th wedding anniversary...

Your husband's company should be responsible for those tickets.

I remeber how that used to be! I was so stressful. I hope your returns come in quickly so you can amend these problems...and I hope the furnace is something simple. Good luck sweetie!

Apparently not.. we had a furnace guy come look at it tonight and he said it should be working, but it's not.. it was working when he left, but now it's blowing cold air again!

You poor girl. I know what you mean. it used to be the same for me when raising the kids. thank God you have a spouse that helps with such things. Just the same its a terrible road to be on. I do know. my youngest son with his little family are having the exact same problems as you while waiting on their taxes. their car got totaled and it wasnt even their fault yet they are without witnesses or anything. So they are without a car and borrowing from her family for rides to school and work until they get taxes back, they also live in an old house thats always needing repairs they have trouble finding money for.

It's funny isn't it?! On how it just hits before taxes. This year I'm expecting a big return because of a few things I made last year, but even before I realize this return, just before Christmas I had to get the transmission of my van fixed! So I'm still paying for it. And it's even worrying me that now, when it's just about right before taxes, something big again might spring up on me.

I keep trying to tell myself that it's all happening for a reason, you know. Like the trouble with my van is happening now because if I don't replace it it might break down this summer when I don't have the money to fix or replace it. Until this muffler problem I was not really sure I wanted to replace it. I might have considered just fixing it up because it only had a few minor problems. Perhaps this is the universe's way of telling me I have to replace it, like it or not.

Yup. Something always ends up happening. I don't own my home, I rent an apartment. But, I have other things, dets, bills, you name it. The list goes on and on. My laptop (the one i'm using right now) is literally coming apart in my hands. It fries anything I plug into it, so to use the internet I have to be completely wireless. Which is a total pain, because that means my phone gets charged once a day and I can't let the battery die then charge it like I'm supposed to. I have been waiting until it hits 5 percent or less. But, that can't be good for my phone. Currently right now, I'm waiting for the w2's to come in so I can file. George's boss, Beth, said she got an e-mail the w2 went out on the 14th, but we're still waiting for them to come in the mail so I can e-file. After I e-file, then I usually have to wait for two weeks for the money. But, the waiting the filing etc... is such a royal pain.

If you get the money direct deposit into your bank account it usually only takes about a week.
