My daughters turtles seem happier now.

My daughter got 3 red eared sliders a month or so ago & has been keeping them in a reptile habitat we got from Walmart. It was a general purpose habitat though so we could only half fill the tank with water & these are water loving turtles. Yesterday I stopped by the local pet store & got some more supplies. I've now added an undergravel filter, new water pump, a floating landing for sunning ( as opposed to the solid one that was only half the height of the tank ) a decorative driftwood piece & some live plants. The environment seems much more realistic now & the turtles have a lot more room to swim thanks to the deeper water. They're quite a bit more active & involved with the surroundings now. It's fun to watch them eat. It's like upside down bobing for apples. I'm thinking we may get some feeder fish soon too. They'll make things that much more interesting for the turtles as they try to catch an extra meal. Now if only we could afford to upgrade from a 10 gallon to a 50 gallon tank like I used to have. What do you guys think of turtles & aquariums?

i have fish and turrles at home but i don't put them in aquariums. my fishes are places in concrete tanks and my turtles are placed on the ground with concrete walls so that they could have more space than the aquariums.

We have people up here in the New England States that leave their goldfish and koi out doors all year round. The water will have ice on it and the fish will survive just fine. they are as hardy as the fish that live in the northern states where they go ice fishing for them through a foot or more of ice. I think that there is something wrong with the water conditions if the koi were dying in Texas because it does not get as cold as it does up here. It could be that there were too many fish in too small of a pond and the ammonia or other toxins were killing the koi or other fish in the pond.

A ten gallon tank is way to small for one turtle much less three turtles unless they are under size turtles which are illegal to sell. The shell needs to be four inches long to be legally sold. They do not have much room to move without running into each out in such a small tank. I would hope that you can get the much larger 50 gallon (or larger) aquarium asap. You could use the smaller aquarium for raising snails or other live foods for them. If you put live plants, the turtles will eat them.

These guys are only a couple inches long so it's plenty big for now. Part of the reason for the plants is cover & natural food.
