Our son is autistic and and we are currently homeschooling him. There were several factors that lead to this decision, including bullying issues and the fact that he has a weakened immune system. I was just curious whether there were any others here that are homscholling their special needs children? What made you decide to homeschool? What challenges have you faced and how have you over come these challenges?

I have a friend that has home schooled her three children for years and will pass this on ok. She was a teacher so establishing a daily timetable was natural for her. It was just a matter of establishing what the tasks were where the challenge of where does school start and where does it end. There did not seem a need to separate the two things just that there was a time for a particular activity. One of those activities was going out.
Since she wanted to expand the children’s horizons she made it a priority to have a go here go there schedule where the children would meet others and have some time for social activities as well. I am sure you can find things for special needs but also something for you as well as your son where you can use your time to do something together as part of social group education.
My good friend had her ups and downs with home schooling but overall it worked out very well as compared to a public system that is not as selective to the needs of the student under any circumstance. There are many positive attributes to home schooling and every loving mother should be congratulated for taking on the experience.
