My cat and dogs are not friends.

Ever since I was a child, I love taking care of animals specially dogs and cats. I have a poodle and a japanese spitz. My mom adopted a cat from her friend because they have to leave the country and don't know who is capable of adopting that animal. At first, I hesitated to accept kitty because i know that my dogs hates cats, but since I saw videos in youtube where cats and dogs can be together in one house without fighting, I agreed that we should keep kitty. At first, they don't care if kitty is walking around the house, but when I started feeding her first, their attitude towards kitty changes. Now, I have a big problem om how to manage them, they always fight and most of the time the dogs are very anxious when the cat is around. Now, I can't decide if we will be giving the cat to others, I feel sorry for kitty :(

Dogs are pack animals: by feeding the cat first, you've shown them that they've been demoted and the cat is more important. Since cats are not pack animals, I would suggest feeding the dogs first (so they know they're more important), then feeding the cat (because she won't care that they're fed first) and seeing if that helps. If the dogs don't get used to the cat, you may have to pass her on - there's no point making your dogs unhappy if you can find her a good home where she'll be loved.

i love animals too especially taking carre of cat, but in your situation i prefer that you must feed the dog first because according to some theorist dogs are easily got jealous in times of feeding and attention thats why the cats and dogs fights because the dog thinks you dont have anymore attention to him/her. And the dogs are brighter than cat

That's a very good point. It might be feeding time that makes everyone made. Maybe if they are separated when they eat or are fed at the same time..it might make it better.

I also always feed the dogs first. The dogs are more laid back when they have full bellies. Also, sometimes dogs need to be trained that it isn't okay to pick on the cats. I rescued a dog whose owner taught her to hate cats. I have four cats so it wasn't acceptable behavior to be aggressive towards the cats. I had to reprimand her often when she would chase the cats or growl at them. Now, she is great friends with the cats and she often will wind up with one sleeping with her. Willy is one of her favorite cats and I have seen her wash him and even share her bowl of food with him. After the work training her, you would never believe that she hated cats. But you do need to realize that it isn't a behavior that is instant between cats and dogs, there needs to be intervention and training for a peaceful household.

hi, yeah, since before we all know and notice that cats and dogs are not really friends, but i had a neighbor who had cat and dog,and the amazing is they are friends, they slept together and never fight,i think it will depend to the owner on how they practice their pet.

I think that it will be so hard to get them to be in harmony with each other. If the dog was younger when you brought them home, it would most likely been a better outcome. Or if the cats where older. I got a pitbull right from the beginning and the cats dont like her at all. But they tolerate her and she stays away from them for the most part. ~C~

I have 3 manx cats. The mom, Miss Kitty Kat, the daughter, Missy Sissy Kat, and the son, Bubba Kat. They do not get along either. The mom, Kitty, has a attitude problem since the kittens were 6 mo. old. Thats when she weaned them. She has been slapping them around since then. The kittens are 4yrs now. They are always careful to detect her mood when approaching her. They never know if she is going to slap them or lick them. Bubba has been fixed so no more kittens. He tried to be the top cat when he was 1yr. But mama keeps him in check. Sissy is the low cat and gets slapped around by both of them. Sometimes mama is friendly with one or the other. Sissy always has a problem with Bubba. I usually dont see all of them at once unless its feeding time. They get into fights too. If im there i stop them by grabbing the water spray bottle. Sometime i come home and see gobbs of hair where they had gotten into a fight. Thank God that is not too often. I call them the 3 stooges sometimes.

Sometimes it takes some time for them to get used to each other. If you let the dogs know you are not happy with their behavior, they might start to do better. I might establish a punishment when they started to act up with the cat. If you have a carrying case or a kennel, if they start too much trouble, maybe you can put them in there for a while. You'll have to be consistent to get results though. Sometimes these things fix themselves though. They might get used to that cat after a bit. Good luck!

Hi, kitty like pooing on a pile of sand. How would you bear it. Some cats poo and pee at will. HOw would you manage it in order that your house is kept clean? I don't keep cats, let alone dogs. Can you train your cats not to poo in the house or in the yard ?

No! Don't give away the kitty. Why does it always have to be the kitty that gets kicked out of the house! It's unfair! Kittens don't bite you they just love you back and when you are sick they care for you and are very independent.

Feeding the dogs first should help, but you have to discipline them right before they start to fight.Since you watch them, you should see the moment when they are getting close to fight mode,by their body language, the eyes, the posture(observe them for a bit),and when that happens, touch them around the shoulders(your fingers like claw)without hurting them, but strong enough to distract them, and say NO! at the same time.Do this constantly and hopefully it will work, and they will get used to Kitty.I have a Rottweiller and 2 cats, can't say that they love each other, rather they coexist.

Ah! cats and dogs...I love these fellas, as to mine - they make good friends, Just make them see each other constantly; there should be food and your presence is highly needed too.

Hi! i had two pet dogs too and then suddenly here comes a kitten. She just entered our house and would not leave, so we just took care of her. Of course at first the dogs would bark or snarl at her but we feed them at the same time. When we play with the dogs we also play with her until they become used to being taken cared of at the same time. They became friends eventually, they play with each other and when the dogs are sleeping the cat also sleeps with them. They only have to get used to each other maybe. From experience, dogs can understand what you say and you can talk to them on being friends with the cat. Good Luck!

I also have a dog and cat at home and they can live together very well but also if the cats get food and the dog see it he is very angry. Like other people already said it is the mentality of the dog and the cat that make it so difficult. But when two animals from little to old were stay together they don't do anything to each other. My dog also don't go to the cats if the don't get food, but if other cats come on his place he would defend it.
