Gas leak, O no!

This is really weird. Yesterday I thought my hot water tank was going out on me. I took a shower and the water was getting cool. I thought it might have been because I had just run the dishwasher, but I have taken a shower after the dishwasher was finished and even while it was still running, and have got hot water. When I got home last night I washed the cats dishes out to feed them their dinner, and the water was barely warm. Down to the basement I went, to try to find out what is going on. Sure enough, the setting was down low on the hot water tank. I don't know how that could have happened. When I turned the setting up and the tank fired up to warm the water, I smelled gas. Called the gas company out and was told the old valve is leaking and needs to be replaced. Now I have to find someone to do this cheap. I do not want to spend the money on a professional because they cost so much money, and I am so close to being able to get a roof on my garage that needed to be done 15 years ago. My friend told me my guardian angel must have turned down the setting to the hot water tank to get my attention so I would smell the gas before something treacherous happened. What do you think? How could the setting miraculously wind down to a low setting like that? It never happened before in the past 4 years I have lived here.

Well, we can all think it's your guardian angel protecting you, as it's really a strange thing you had encountered. You're lucky that someone out there guarded you... and wished you fixed it soon! A more lucky day to you!

Very strange. I do wonder if the new tenant had anything to do with it. Maybe, maybe not. He swears up and down he did not go near it. He left several hours before I ran the dishwasher and took a shower, but he was home when I fed my cats.
