I am really upset right now and I can not begin to explain my feelings. This may sound funny to many of you but I am really upset. My fish gave 16 babies, out of which only 11 survived. So I removed the mother fish and babies in a different bowl so they can relax and not be disturbed by the other male fishes in the tank. Today morning when I woke up to feed them, only 5 were in the bowl. The rest of the babies were eaten by the mother. HOW COULD SHE EVEN DO THIS!!!! The mother of this fish who just gave babies never did so, she gave so many babies and never ate them. But this daughter has a weird gene of eating her own babies!!.. I have removed her from the tank and let the babies be alone, as they are more safe. Dont fishes have feelings of motherhood? I am really shocked!!

Oh God, Bamboee you scare me badly. I thought it was a human ;'(. What kind of fish you have got ? It is natural some fishes eat their own babies, like catfish. I dunno why, Even cats, the male sometimes kidnap his babies and eat them. I ever saw it and I was like eewww that was not a good view. I think your fish was very hungry or she saw them as food :D.

Hello dear friend, Gosh if it was human i would be scared myself. Havent heard a story but yes I did hear on the news that a woman was tortured by her husband for years and to take revenge she cut him in pieces and literally made a curry out of him and ate him. Then she called the police herself and informed them of what she said, I saw the interview of her it was creepy and disgusting. Well ya my neighbour had a cat, when she gave babies. 2 of them got killed their brains were half gone it was done by the male cat. then she threw him out.. She might have been hungry :(, I dont see any other reason. thanks for your response.

Well yes sis, I am sure she might have gone through so much pain that she could not think of anything else but to kill him.. That is exactly what she said to the media, that its a warning to men out there.. dont think woman is weak or something, she can do many things if she comes in anger. awww I feel bad for your cat, I know cats love their babies alot. Bad male, I think he was trying to dominate her. Yewww why do they do that? :( Cheers my dear.

Hi dear.. Perhaps you dont know the instinct of fishes. The mom fishes often keep her babies on mouth when she finds any danger around for her babies. Hope this information will help you in future. I am telling you from my wildlife experiences. there may be another cause hidden. have a nice time.

Again, the mom may feel danger seeing the environment coz a mature fish knows the surrounding of their residence. If she just swallowed then there are chances to vomit where all babies will come out alive. Its also fish's nature of protection but your word "bite bite" has made me to think on a different way. Anyway, can you post the picture of that mom fish. I wish to know the instinct of that species. If you can..... have a nice time.

Hello Again dear, Well I do know, I have seen documentaries of these fishes who take their babies in their mouth when they know there is danger and then release them out in a safer place. But my fish was CRAZY! She was alone with her babies, they were no other fishes in the bowl not even a male fish. She ATE THEM! Like bite bite eat eat and then swallowed them alive! how could she DO THAT.. she is horrible.. i cant even look at her, I have shifted her in another bowl. I will just feed her but not talk to her like I do with other fishes.. no No no no !.. Poor babies, i feel so bad for them :( I wish she was like her mother, who never ate her 40 babies! If she did then she would not be alive now.. (ok i am becoming emotional) :( Thanks for your response.. "sniff sniff"

Hello.. It depends upon what kind of fish it is... Animals like dogs or snakes eat their babies... A female dog after delievery gets so hungry that she eats half of them, I have heard... And a snake too eats his own eggs.. That is perfectly natural for them.. You will see a mom dog protecting her live babies, and yet, she has eaten those babies siblings before some time.. . I think, the kind of fish you have is one of such animals..

Hmmmm... They are animals. They are not humans Well, I think that is what we call 'survival of the fittest'. That mother fish is we do not know the reason why she ate her babies. We really do not know. The same with the human if poverty occurs and there is no food to eat or let us say, stranded in the middle of the sea. I heard that if many people stranded in the middle of the sea with no food to eat, they would end up eating each other to survive.

Omg.. Humans eating other humans just sounds insane. I guess in hunger people do anything, then eating should not be a big deal for such people. its just sad, that for survival we take other's life. thanks for your response.

To many fishes it's normal to eat their babies. Reaso can be lack of the right food or perhaps fear. I am not specialized in all kind of fishes, know a lot about predators and I know that if the mother feels treatened there are species who eat their own kids too and they don't know they did it. It's a reaction in times of need. I don't think all fishes have the feelings of motherhood. It depends on the kind of fish. With some fishes the men take care of the babies, the other fishes come alive and have to take care of themself (so yes it's better to take the mother out because they don't need her to raise them. Unless their are a lot of plants where the babies can hide). I think the fishes you talk about are goldfish, black mollies or guppys (don't know the english names for it) or so. If this is true it fits. They don't need their mother. Might be better if you start breeding you get informed first so you wont't get shocked. BTW this is for them normal behaviour = nature.

Hello Kitty, Well I did have a pair of guppi fish and they were just adorable, they gave several babies out of which only few survived and made it to adult hood. I never separated the previous pair with their babies, and I had always kept a count and they never ate even one of them. She gave birth to more than 40 babies but never did one go missing. So i am just very much surprised that this female choose to eat her babies. I guess your right that they might be just doing it out of fear or out of hunger. I do feed it in time, Thank God i did not watch her eat her babies or I dont know what I would have done! THanks for your response dear.

I have not experienced this myself but I know and read about animals that eat chidlren. I think maybe they take those children as a threat or something like that and since they feel so much insecure, the only thing is to get rid of them by eating.

There are tons of animals that will eat their young. Its called the circle of life. unfortunately we watch good nature shows, and then see movies like Nemo and think fish, mammals, animals, etc are good parents. Think about the sea turtle that buries her eggs in the sand. They hatch and have to come up out of the sand and pray they make it to the water. Very few make it between seagulls, pelicans, even humans go beserk when they can grab one and think it can be a pet. Unfortunately its just a life circle of how animals survive. Sorry you lost your fish. Same thing happened to us when we were going to try and raise Discus fish. they ate the eggs. We finally gave up trying to breed them. Angel Fish will do the same thing. Good Luck to you.

Hello Marie, I have watched tons of documentaries and I have seen certain sea creatures give their lives just to make sure that their young survive. There is a kind of spider that lives underneath the water and the babies eat the mother up after they are born because they dont have anything to feed on. It was devastating watching that but as you said its circle of life. Well it was sad she ate the other 6 babies, i wish I did not shift her in the bowl with them thinking she might be wanting to spend time with her little ones. But she was not like her mother at all, her mother was different. She gave around 40 babies and ate not even one of them, neither did the father. I am sad to hear about your discus fish, my fish is guppi fish! Now I will care for the 5 very well.. Thanks alot for your response. I just wish it didnt happen!
