Would you take guitar lessons online if you could?

1 on 1 music lessons are usually done in the teacher's home, or at a local studio. However, other businesses are doing great things with the internet, so why not musical instrument instruction? Webcams, video chat, skype, and other resources are owned and used so widely that there should be little question here. I still think it's best to be in the same room, but to be able to tap into markets outside of your community would be great!

Well, I guess online lessons would be helpful for someone who already had the basics down....but nothing can compare to a physical person prodding you along in person. No online course could ever replace my guitar/bass teacher.... My teacher made me put my fingers in positions I didn't think the human hand could possibly do... My teacher made me play scales over and over and faster and faster until I thought my forearm was going to explode... My teacher made me listen to the same 8 seconds of a song over and over and over and over until I got it right... My teacher made me play until I had blisters and my finger tips bled......and then made me play some more... My teacher was a total jerk.....but he taught me well and I still love him to this day.........usually.....

Yes, each format has it's benefits and drawbacks. I like the way your "teacher" pushed you beyond "yourself". :~D I'm self taught myself... there are benefits and drawbacks to that also. What I'm doing is one on one instruction, on real time webcam... so I'm planning on being just as tough and pushy as I am with the students I teach in my guitar room. ;~)

Hi Ted, I,personally would prefer the one on one interaction with the instructor. I'm sure with all the technology that we now have, it's probably almost the same as being there. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. I'm sure that's it. My daughter has been applying to schools for photography. She is a little reluctant to go too far out of our area. I believe she is thinking to cut costs by living at home. Anyway, she was contemplating on line classes. Another art form that for some reason, I just feel she'd be missing "something" by not being right there, hands-on. We've had this debate and I feel at this point, it's probably just me. As for the business side of it...yes! I can certainly agree with that. Not only attracts more business but also opens more doors to discovering new talents that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

True, one on one, in the same room is best. However, that isn't always what is best for the student or the family dynamic.

That's true. My daughter and I discussed this and I did get her point. Considering our location, finances etc., I have come to see the benefits in on line learning. She convinced me and if that is what she wants to do, I'm behind her. Good luck on your guitar lessons.

i did take physical guitar lessons and i actually took piano lessons online but now both of my daughters each have a guitar (one has an electric and the other one an acustic) but they both have apps on their phone and ipod that will teach them guitar.

ipod apps is another interesting option. However, so far, the ones I've seen only teach students how to play songs. Also, they can't correct bad habits that many new students develop. Of course, there are benefits to them too.

That might be cool, actually, yeah. Of course when you are first learning things like open chords, even bar chords and power chords, sometimes it helps to have that person sitting right next to you to move your fingers to the right strings and the right frets because looking at illustrations of what each chord is can get confusing when you're a noob.

No, I mean on live webcam, where you and the instructor can see and hear each other... real time.

Frankly speaking, I would prefer learning guitar at a music academy. It's true that online lessons would be very convenient. But the risk of making mistakes without knowing would be higher. It would be hard for online tutors to guide and pinpoint mistakes made by the student. Simple yet crucial mistakes such as the repetitive stroking of the hands might go wrong. Thus, without proper face to face guidance, it would be hard to correct the mistakes. Repititive mistakes would become habit, and it will be much harder to correct in the future. So I would prefer learning guitar in an academy instead of online. So yea. That would be my point of view :D hope this helped.

Yes, and that is one of the drawbacks of being self taught also. However, one on one through webcams, the teacher and student can see what each other are doing. I'm not saying webcam based lessons are the best for everyone. I agree with you, one on one, in the same room, with all the support features of an academy or studio is the ideal... but not everyone has access to such facilities.

Yes, there are a lot of great youtube videos that help you learn to play songs. I've had students use them myself. However, all they can teach you is how to play songs. They don't teach you the guitar. Welcome to Mylot!

I probably would. I actually just bought the DVD of Guitar for dummies or something like that, so I can start. So I'm hoping I can learn the basics from that. I have also seen some video on youtube of people teachin simple chords to maybe I can try that as well. I think it's best for me to do it like that for now because I find it hard to learn from someone else, I'm very self-sufficient and I get very frustrated when someone tries to explalin to me and I don't get it. Basically I fell useless, so for now I'm using videos to teach me.

Taking online guitar lessons or some kind of formal music instruction is going to put the foundation for accomplishment. Technology is currently at the point that taking online guitar lessons is the way to go. You have a lot of more options and are only restricted by the speed and value of your internet connection.

Maybe but that would be hard. It is different when you have someone to really teach you how you should position your fingers, etc.

yes i would i have always wanted to go take guitar lessons one year i even bought a guitar but i am just so busy that i do not have time for at home lessons or to go to a studio. So i think that this is a genius idea. It is probably better to have someone in the same room as you though so i dont know how accurate it would be but it sounds like an amazing idea

I think this only should be considered if it's the only option. If you really want to learn how to play an instrument, it's way smarter to do it the normal way. I can understand how some people find it better to use the internet, but I think it shouldn't be done that way

No. That would only be a waste of money. Although I can't say Im great at playing guitar, I at least learn how to play one at an average level by watching and reading some free tutorials online.
