Well I go garbage picking fairly often and I don't have a chance to test the items until I get home. Since most of the items don't work, what I usually do is just take the small items I know I can sell off of it. (Example: I find an old broken computer. I take all the memory cards, video card, and harddrive from it. I don't even bother with anything else on it.) But it wasn't until recently that I thought of selling the precious metals to the junk yard. But is it worth taking the time to break the stuff all the way down to scrap steel, copper, aluminum, and et cetera. If there are any experienced scrappers on myLot I would appreciate some tips and tricks of the trade. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

My father does collect metals too for scrap. Actually we have a shop in our residence since my father's work is all about metal fabrication. We sell it by the time we collected lots of unused metals and i believe in the saying, there money in trash. Thus, recycling really helps in so many ways.

well I know a few people here in Australia who make a living doing this sort of thing, it is good if you have the storage area to store the different metals and things until you have enough to cash in so to speak as one man that I know does, I see him going off with a truck load of stuff sometimes, I say good on you for getting out there ansd doing something worthwhile...

I do sorting out of scraps in our home too. I think it is a very nice thing to do considering it can help the environment through recycling of materials. However, I really don't sort out metals into their types. I just move it over to the junk shop and let them assess it as scrap metal for a fixed price per weight. I do sort out the glass, plastic bottles, newspaper, papers and cartons. It has been a habit for me ever since. But I really don't sort them out according to specific types and details too. I just set them out also in the junk shop at a fixed weight like what I do with the scrap metals. Earnings wise, it is a decent amount as return for all the consumer goods that we bought. At least, I got some money back from the consumable goods and packaging that I pay for. Just continue the habit and think of it as a dual purpose/positive activity. You save the environment and you earn at the same time.
