Adopted Leonardo-cat rescue

I decided to adopt Leonardo because people are beating up on the cats outside. I got in a bit of an argument with my neighbor who insisted Leonardo is his. The guy doesn't live here, he just feeds the strays a can or 2 once or twice a day, no fresh water for them, no other food. So I have been feeding them because they came to my door hungry all the time. He's got a houseful of dogs, at least 6. They are neglected because they are locked in the house he does not even live in. He just stops by a few times a day to feed them I guess, and to drop off scrap or pick it up. So far Leonardo is filled with fleas so they gave him capstar at the vets. he has a viral infection that is respiratory, causing him coughing and sneezing and watery eyes. They told me the medication is expensive, so I did not have them give it this time. Just praying my other guys do not contract it, because it is catchy but not terribly serious. His urine is very little, and I have a concern about that. I had to back off on a few of the tests because of the cost. I'm terribly upset at the expense to care for him, but what can I do? I cannot let him live on the front porch, that is not fun for him. Nor could I let him in the house if he has a communicable disease that would be harmful to my other cats. I had to forego the bloodwork for another time because the surgery is so costly. O, and get this--they don't include the pain package with the neuter! You have to pay extra. Since it is included with a declaw that covers his pain management, thank goodness. O, what did I do! This cat is already a money pit and he hasn't even been inside the house yet. Hopefully this is it with him. From now on, if I see anymore stray cats around, I'm ignoring them no matter how adorable and little they may be. I just cannot stand to see a kitten out there fending for itself........that is my problem.......... Have you ever rescued an animal? Did you keep it or drop it off someplace?

Hi rose... I highly appreciate your effort and desire on saving the lives of those poor dogs. I started a discussion on pet owner days ago where i wrote that if we cant feel the instincts of pets and dont understand the responsibilities then better not to have a pet or adopt. Yes, i have rescued animals and birds several times and some incidents i have shared here too. Have a nice time.

My new little kitty is very sick right now, and i am doing the best I can to care for him. I am feeding him water from a dropper because he is not eating nor drinking after he had his surgery. He has a respiratory infection.

You know, even though you will never get a lick of gratitude out of that cat, you are saving his life. This seems like a bad timeto be taking in strays, we had a puppy get inside our fence last month that wouldn't leave almost like he was trying to convince us that he lives here. Well our landlord wants a $700 dog deposit so she most certainly was not convincing us! We gave her to a couple we know that does rescue strays and though she was in our house for two days and we not only saw nothing wrong with her, our cat(we have two) were fine both before and after she left. The couple took the dog straight to the vet that day, turns out the dog had parvo, started manifesting symptoms that same day and it cost them over $500 to get her all better. Then they found her a home. it really was a blessing because even if we had taken her to a vet ourselves we wouldn't have had the money to save her. God sees what you are doing for his/her lesser creatures and is pleased by the humane treatment of his creatures. That is what I was always taught and that is what I believe.

My goodness, the poor puppy. It's like he had a second sense of whose yard to claim as his, because you certainly did take care of him. That is very good of you and your friends to do that for the dog. I think Leonardo will like being in a warm place. When it gets warm outside, he may give me trouble. lol. Trying to keep him in will be a challenge for certain. I am happy to hear puppy is doing ok.

Penny is the one I had adopted - We were forced to let her out of our lives. Sad but it was inevitable.
You are in deep trouble rose. I know exactly how you feel. I too cannot bear to see animals being neglected. I had a female next door. They left her there as they shifted to a new town. We used to give her food at her own place every single day. Then we realised she was pregnant. We let her litter there and when the babies were big enough we gave them away. We then brought her home and adopted her along with our 3 other dogs. We have fenced up our area and no dogs get in and none of ours go out. But this female who had now become a stray had enough boy friends and to our utter shock we had a few dogs jump in just to be with her. This was too much for us as these strays could be carrying the worst diseases. Reluctantly I had to pack her off and my other neighbour took her far away and left her near a hotel hoping she would be fed there. These are tough decisions rose but sometimes we are left with no altrnatives.

That is very difficult to bear. Funny in a way because of all the friends she made that wanted to hang out with her, but you are sadly right. You do not know what kinds of disease they may have and bring to your animals. What a heartbreaker that must have been for you. Hopefully someone at the hotel adopted her and she is well taken care of. She sounds like a very sweet, loveable dog. I am sorry you have had this experience.

thank you! Please keep praying for the money to roll in to help. I could not stand another minute to have him outside. He is so lovable and playful! He was playing with everyone that came into the exam room. That is great! I really hope my kitties will get along with him now. He will be in a room all to himself for a few days so he can recover, then I will introduce him to the others. Fun times! lol.
