As hard as I try to keep my conversations with my friends private, I cannot, especially with such a profound statement. Needless to say this was another "shock and awe " moment my friend dealt me in one of our recent conversations. I know you are as shocked as I am that anyone could have uttered those words especially someone intelligent but I can assure you that my friend is extremely intelligent and was lucid when she said. So "HOLD YOUR HORSES!!!' while I attempt to explain what she was saying. She wasnt referring that need in all of us to believe that our circumstances will improve in the future ,well not in its basic form. She was referring that eternal hope that some people have about some of their "pipe dreams" that will never come true yet they keep believeing. This is definitely a moot point with different persons having different views but at the heart of it is a need to know when to give up these "pie in the sky dream" and pursue more practical avenues. To illustrate, she used the example of a singer with average abilities instrument wise and vocal ability sitting at home and strumming on a guitar for ten years expecting a big contract from a record company. Now this is a person with a big heart and is a sole believer in his abilties and is willing to spend forever to fulfill his dream. Now according to my friend, having hope is good but this hope should be grounded in some reality and there must come a point when one aborts these dreams or the very least explore other avenues . THIS IS THE KIND OF HOPE THAT KILLS ....WELL ACCORDING TO MY FRIEND ...WHAT SAY YOU ??????

Using your friends example, and if I am reading it correctly, it doesn't sound like the guitar strumming singer is making much effort to become a professional, if he is just sitting at home playing. I think he knows he doesn't have what it takes, otherwise, he would be making more of an effort.

I looked up the definition of the word "Hope." It said, 1. "Trust that what is wanted will happen. 2. Want and expect." I don't think this person is hoping. I think he's wishing.

Sometimes we don't have anything at all, only hopes.

If we don't have HOPE then we will have no DREAMS. Therefore we will strive to achieve NOTHING. It sounds as though your friend has had her hopes shattered more than one time and therefore no longer wishes to yearn for something to occur. Instead she is only looking forward to the guaranteed. This is no way to love. Dreaming and hoping gives us something to look forward to - it gives us reason to live like there's no tomorrow - dance like no one is watching and so much more.

Hope does not kill frustration do. As your example a singer playing his guitar for ten years. He maybe not been successful. But does it mean he is not happy? For ten years he plays guitar. A things he like to do. His passion, his joy. It does not matter if he is a star or just playing alone in a barn. What is important is that you enjoy what you are doing.
