St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in Savannah, Georgia

The city of Savannah, Georgia, is world-famous for their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. This celebration has been compared to the Mardis Gras Fat Tuesday celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana; and it has been said that the only St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the world that is larger than the one in Savannah is the one held in Dublin, Ireland. The event starts early in the morning. A group of community leaders and other people get together for a special breakfast to kick off the event. The breakfast of followed by a large parade through the city. After the parade, the real partying begins. The historic district of Savannah becomes a mass of people drinking, partying, and having a good time. River Street is the center of the event. River Street is right on the Savannah River, and it is lined with restaurants, bars, stores, and souvenir shops. The party continues until the early morning hours. This year is going to be a really big party, because St. Patrick ’s Day is on Saturday this year. This means the Party is going to start on Friday afternoon, and will likely last late into the night on Sunday. This event is good news for local businesses. People from all over the country (and the world) come to Savannah every year to attend this celebration. Most of the local hotels are usually completely booked up well in advance. Local bars, restaurants, and other local businesses benefit from this event as well. While a lot of people do not like this event because of all of the partying and drinking that goes on, no one can deny the fact that this annual celebration brings a lot of revenue to the economy of Savannah. Money made during this time helps local establishments make it through other times of the year when business may be slow. Savannah is a coastal town with nice beaches and other attractions that make tourism an important part of the equation for their economy. A lot of Savannah businesses struggle during the winter months, and the St. Patrick’s Day events provide a nice boost for them after the slow season. While I have been to this event only once, I highly recommend you attend this celebration if you get the chance to do so. If you are not into all the partying and the nightlife, Savannah is still a nice city to visit. The scenery is beautiful, and there are interesting historic sites everywhere. There are many good restaurants and good places to shop. There are lots of good places to fish, and the beaches are nice. Will you be attending St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah? Even if you choose not to be there for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration, you should really consider a vacation to Savannah…

I honestly didn't know that there was a large St. Patrick's Day celebration in Savannah, but I have had the opportunity to visit the city when I was a young girl. I absolutely loved everything about my visit to Savannah. For me, the highlight of my trip there was visiting Juliette Gordon Low's home because I was a Girl Scout and she was one of the people that I really admired as I was growing up. I hope to one day be able to take my own daughter (who is also a Girl Scout) to visit Savannah as well.

I spent a couple of days in Savannah in 1993, very nice town. I've never been there for St. Patrick's day though. No immediate plans to visit, too many other things going on!

Hi goldeneagle! I have been through Savannah on my way to Florida and it is a beautiful place. I have not got to spend any amount of time there really..maybe a night but I would love to come to such a celebration. It sounds amazing. I wear green on St. Patrick's Day but as far as a celebration, there haven't really been any to mention in my area. Perhaps this summer I will try to come to Savannah for a couple of days. I am planning to go on vacation this year and would like to make it a long one. Take care and enjoy the party!
