do some films make to many sequels

I am a big film fan, im sitting at home 'watching police academy' which is a classic film from the eighties. I was just remembering that these films started out brilliant but then far to many sequels were made and just cashed in on the name of the film. Another great film franchise was the 'Saw' movies which again started off brilliant but just carried on far to long and just got rubbish towards the end. Do some films just cash in on the name and make to many sequals or is it good keep these films going and going. Also which other great films made to many sequels?, and which films should have made MORE sequels.
