the other female seems to have no more milk to give her pups, we tried to give powder milk(mixed with water of course) would that be fine? also earlier I tried to give one of her pups to the other dog who gave birth, I dont know what the dog was doing but the way I see it she might eat the puppy since its not her own so before she could do some damage I removed the pup, would dogs really eat newborn puppies that's not their own? thanks in advance to those who'd reply

Hi Daydream, I do not think the dog would kill the puppy, but it might kill the puppy accidentally. I wonder how you manage! One dog giving birth is tough enough, and you have two dogs with so many new born puppies.

Yeah, its been one crazy week! I thought I had stopped the other dog from being pregnant by starving her and giving her a bath to make her stressed and all but she still managed to give birth to three beautiful pups, making me NOT want the puppies to die!

A newborn pup needs to have a special formula that you can buy at a feed store or a store that specializes in things for pets , like the "Pet Barn". Perhaps you could help the lactating dog to accept the other's pets, but don't leave them alone together until you are sure of her acceptance. Reconstituted powered milk will be fine when the pups are a little older.

You might be lucky to have a mother that will accept a pup from another litter but it is unusual. It has been known for a new mother to take on a fox cub for instance. Normally thet push them away and won't let them feed. We move on to puppy milk powder after 4 weeks to give the mother a rest and build up her strength. Mind you, it depends on the number of puppies as labradors have 8 to 10 pups in our litters. If there are only 2 or 3 pups it is easier on the mum. We use Skinners puppy milk powder with warm water - follow the instructions on the packet. Not too hot; not too cold; just like for babies. A good tip to help to stop mum from crushing pups by mistake. In the whelping box screw a 3"(75mm) wide batten about 3-4" (75-100mm) above the bottom of the box all round. The smaller the dog the lower the batten. When the mother lies down to feed the batten keeps her back away from the side of the box and forms a void in the corner for puppy to shelter in without being suffocated. This trick has saved the life of many of our puppies. Count the puppies - 1,2,3,...8,9,? - missing one - rummage round her back and out pops an igdignant tiny mite squealing for milk! As said above, one litter is a handful so with two you must really be working hard!

hi so you are saying that the pups were bottle fed right?it's okay to give the pups to the other female dog to have some milk to feed on but you have to assist it because the lactating dog might turn her weight on the puppy.powder milk is just okay for the pups but there are other powder milk designated for new born puppies as well so that they can get the proper nutrition.i suggest that you ask for a veterinarians advice on those aspects so that no problems would arise.and just to be sure that the puppies and their lactating moms will get the best nutrition they need in order to grow healthy and strong and away from diseases :) .

I don't think the dog would eat the puppy. She would push the puppy away from her, though. Giving any milk is good, rather than let them suck from a different mother.

I am not sure weather she will eat her or not but i am sure she will not feed her.As the smell of two mothers transfuse into the new born and they know the difference in their and other's child.
