Chatspeak drives me crazy! Can you read and understand chatspeak? Even if you can read it, do you prefer plain old English to chatspeak? What are some opinions from members on this board trying to learn English? Does chatspeak interfere with your learning experience?

I am annoyed by chatspeak. And not just the LOL or LMAO but people's whose entire conversation is in texting mode. U no, ppl who dnt take tme to write out things. Especially on a website where you get paid for the quality of your post. Do people not understand that if they spelt things out correctly, they may actually get a longer post and earn more money? It's bad writing. Ok, sorry I'm ranting here.

Finally, someone else understands. :) I don't care if it's paid or not though, I think it's a bad habit to use chatspeak. I type so fast that I can't think in chatspeak fast enough for that to be better. Maybe people who use chatspeak need to spend more time with the typing tutor.

Well. I know exactly what you mean, chatspeak drives me crazy also (though I use LOL myself every now and then). It looks strange and it's a mess to decipher (though I've became quite good at it running into it quite often on various sites). Luckily it didn't bother my learning experience 'cause luckily I read a lot of books in English so I have enough contact with the English language as it is without having to bother with one forum or another.

I'll use LOL sometimes (and occasionally even OMG and LMAO). But rarely do I ever use more than that. I don't know any languages other than English (at least, not fluently). But to me, chatspeak isn't English. It's so hard to get meaning out of it. I find that usually people who use it don't have anything important they're saying with it anyway, so I don't bother making an effort to read it.
