The True Blood series?

Constantly I hear people talking about this series, both the TV series and the book series. NO SPOILERS, please, by the way!!! I have a good friend of mine who is OBSESSED with the show and the books. I'm wondering.... What do you feel about these books/shows?
I'm always in the market for looking for new books to read, and series to watch. I'd prefer reading, just because then I don't have to buy the season on DVD or try to catch it on TV... I'm just wondering if anyone out there could give me a synopsis (NO SPOILERS!!!) of what True Blood is about, and whether the books or the TV show is better?
I know it's sort of sci-fi, which I'm not totally into, but from all the raving I've heard about I think I MIGHT give it a shot and buy the first book...But I haven't decided yet..
Is this a series worth reading? (Again - I've heard from many many people who seem like they're crazy about it). What do you think?

I have really enjoyed reading the series. I just picked up the latest from the library and cannot wait to spend my day off tomorrow reading it. They will probably not withstand the test of time, they are nice quick reads for the most part. Reading them in order is probably best because they do build on each other. Give the first one a try and if you dont like it, you wasted a few hours of time. If you do end up enjoying them, then you not only have the books which are continuing to come out, but you also have the TV series.
