Linking bank account to PayPal

I want to have my PayPal account linked with my bank account so I can have my online earnings along with my work earnings. The thing is, I've always been a little hesitant because I don't want my information stolen and stuff like that. But I think it'd be nice to have all my money in one place instead of having some of my money in PayPal and only able to use it online. Is it safe to link my checking account to PayPal? If I do link it will I be able to unlink it at any time?

It is exactly as safe to link your bank account with PayPal as it is to use any online banking facility and far safer to make payments using PayPal than to use a credit/debit card for payment. When you pay through PayPal, only ONE site knows your bank details (PayPal). If you pay with a credit/debit card only, all the sites you use will have your card number and many sites don't hold their data as securely as PayPal does. The only thing you have to be aware of is that your account is ONLY as secure as your password, so NEVER use the same password you do elsewhere and ALWAYS make sure that it's a 'strong' password (more than eight characters with upper and lower case letters, symbols and numerals and NEVER composed of words or personal information which might easily be guessed).

Thank you. You have a really good point too about only one site having my banking info as opposed to multiple sites if I use a credit/debit card.

PayPal was created initially to make transactions over the Internet more secure and to make it easy for one person to transfer an amount to another. It was (and is) difficult for an individual to set up a payment system so that they can accept transfers from any card (credit or debit) safely and securely so PayPal was set up as an intermediary to deal with all the security procedures which need to go on in the background (things which you don't see and hardly ever think about, such as 'is this a valid card number?' and 'does the account have funds to honour the transaction?'). It was only later that PayPal came to be used as a general tool for sites to pay their workers. It's important to understand that PayPal is NOT a bank. It is merely a payment facilitator and a transaction tool. Although it is possible (and sometimes necessary) to hold a balance with PayPal, this is not like a balance held by your bank. In effect, it is an 'advance payment' to cover services which you expect PayPal to render for you at some future date. A bank or credit company also usually provide a similar service but they also provide many more services as part of the contract between them and you. The distinction is an important one but one which many people don't see because we tend to take such services on trust and see banks as ONLY or mainly performing the same kind of service as PayPal (as a payment facilitator).

I hope you got this all figured out. I think it's safe. I've had my PayPal account linked for more than 3 years. Although I have other accounts which I use for my 'real' world. My 'virtual' account which I use for my online work has been steady (and safe).

Ok thank you, I think I might actually link the two together. It would make more sense for me to have all my spending money in one place where everything can be combined.
