@jugga You are not alone. I have suffered from insomnia for many years now. If I am in bed and asleep before 3:00 AM, you can bet it is pretty much because I am sick or have finally succumbed to the need to take one of those lovely little sleeping pills. My doctor fusses at me all the time about the importance to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. That is just so much easier said than it is for me to do. My insomnia is caused by a thyroid condition. I don't really like to take the sleeping pills. At first, that was because the kids were younger and I was afraid if one of them woke up in the middle of the night sick or something, that I would be to zonked out to hear them. Now, I don't take them because my husband has COPD and I am afraid that I will not be able to wake up if he has trouble breathing. It is miserable to be tired and not able to sleep. I have been so tired that I have been unable to sleep if that makes any sense. I have been up for days at a time. It is not fun at all. I hope that you find something to help you sleep soon. I am sure that you have been told to reduce caffeine, not watch television or be on the computer (it stimulates the brain), at least an hour before bedtime and all that other stuff that doesn't seem to work for me.

@jugga I hope that you find something healthier and more easily obtained to aid you in getting to sleep. If you have a regular physician, maybe you could get them to get you medication that is legal. I do not know if it is alright to name names on here, but there are at least two really good prescription medications out there that work for me really well. As I stated before, they work too well and cause me to fear not waking up in case of an emergency.

jugga: I am sorry that I wasn't much help. If you will, keep me posted on those Chinese techniques and let me know if they work for you. I may need to try them myself.

I sometimes go days without sleeping. I am an insomniac and I have been for a few years now. It's horrible at times. It can really mess up your life. I almost failed my major because of it last year. And people really don't understand. They just think that you don't take things seriously and choose to stay up that late. They don't get it's not about not wanting to sleep, it's about not being able to. So yes, I know what it's like to have insomnia. I advise you to change your bad sleeping habits asap, because once you have chronic insomnia it's damn hard to get rid of.

Cranos: I know from whence you speak! It goes so far beyond horrible, but I don't think there is a word to accurately describe it. It is so miserable not to be able to sleep. I have had insomnia for about 16 years now. It all started with a thyroid condition. You are right, if you don't get sleep habits under control then you may never sleep right again. My doctor fusses at me all the time because I don't get even half the amount of sleep that he says I am suppose to every night. He has given me a sleep aid, but I can't take it because it works too well. I have a husband and son that have health issues and I fear that I will not be able to wake up if they need me to and certainly wouldn't be able to drive them to a hospital if I am groggy to the point of blurry vision.

I try to go without sleeping aids. The only ones I ever used was diazepam (valium) last year because it got really bad, but then my body got used to it and it doesn't really work effectively anymore. I'm only 20 years old and I don't want to jump from product to product the rest of my life. I heard sleep therapy works great. I'm going to do it as soon as there's room in the program and I have money for it, as it is quite expensive. They basically teach you how to condition your body so you can sleep again. It takes a lot of willpower but apparently it's very effective. 8 out of 10 participants (who finished to program) stop using sleeping pills altogether.

i too have bouts of insomnia. This usually happens when i am terribly preoccupied with my work in the office or when i am thinking of my own small business. I have tried sleeping pills and they do work but i told myself that i should not have the habit of using it too much.
