Selling the Gospel

Philippines

People have been using religion and the Bible as some kind of business. They get inside buses to preach the Gospel to the passengers, distribute envelopes for the passengers to put some money in after "preaching" for about 5 minutes, and then get out as fast as they can when the bus stopped. I remembered one who just stood up and talked, kept on babbling and not caring if people are listening or not, but became lively when he distributed the envelopes. At first, I did admire their courage for doing that because I thought they were doing it like Christians should, but when I saw them distributing envelopes, I got dismayed. Not that I didn't have money to give but with the way they use religion or the Bible for profit.

I don't want to say these people are fakes with only the intention of getting money from the unsuspected, but Jesus did say there would be false prophets; so we must be on our guard. This is why we should know the word of God, so we can discern their message.

Absolutely, but this people are saying the right things to gain people's trust. But when you hear them "preach" the same topic inside different buses, you could be sure that they have memorized it. It's obvious they are only after the money. But if they preach without asking people for money, that I would applaud. Thank you, bb! Nice share

@neelia Was this offering voluntary or did they make you feel as though you "had" to contribute? Could they have been considering it a "love" offering? I have never heard of folks getting on a public bus and doing this. It is rather strange. I think that local churches should see to the financial needs of the preacher, however, I have a problem with the television preachers. Though, some are good, God fearing, Bible preaching people, a lot are seemingly in it for the money. I just find it hard to believe that God has told them to collect several million dollars for a luxury plane or gold plated steeple, or whatever else. I do have a couple favorite preachers that I enjoy watching, but they are constantly taking breaks to ask for money. I can follow the scriptures they discuss in my Bible. I think that when you are doing God's work, you should not be concerned with gold jewelry and fancy cars. If your heart is in the right place, then you trust God to take care of what you need. I think the church should pay secretaries if the church is a large one and requires regular office hours, but I don't think any other person in the church should be paid. I am the secretary for the little church that I attend, but it is small, so my duties are minimal and I do not accept any money offered. I do make up the program bulletins and print them at home. I use my own printer, paper, and ink. It is part of doing God's work, and He will make sure I am able to afford to do it. For me, personally, it would not feel right.

I think that in that situation, it was wrong. If you are on a bus, then it should be a voluntary "love offering". God asks that you let your heart be your guide in these sorts of matters, so whoever was responsible should not have made anyone feel forced to contribute.

It happens here in our country. And yes, they did make people feel as though you had to contribute because they put the envelope on your lap and then come back for it after distributing envelopes to the other passengers. About television preachers, yeah, I agree with you. They shouldn't be asking viewers to donate money, they should be asking God to meet their needs. There's one television preacher that I like, I mean his sermons, and he is Joel Osteen although I only knew a little about his background which is not bad. I do agree that if your heart is in the right place, and not focused on or always expecting, or even asking, money from people, I believe God will supply every need. Thanks, deedee

Hi neelia, There are many people who use religion to make a fast dollar, and some have become very rich while doing it. Bus companies should not allow this sort of thing to happen on their buses, and would not if more people complained. When I see an evangelist on TV, I can change the channel, but I'm stuck on the bus until I reach my destination, and I should not have to listen to this. I would much rather give money to a homeless man on the street. Religion was meant to help people, to be a comfort to the sick and the elderly, but it has become, in some cases, nothing but a money making racket and a disgrace. I think that religion as we know it has seen it's day. It is good to be spiritual, as it makes us aware of the needs of others, teaches compassion and better way of life. Religion must change or die, it is that simple. Blessings.

I would prefer an evangelist preaching on TV, than someone who enters in, preach, then asks for money. They could be just ordinary passengers but 5 minutes or so after the bus has move on, they begin preaching, and that irritates the driver sometimes. This happens in our country. Yes, religion has become a money making racket. But thankfully there are still Christians who love God more than their religion. Thank you, Pose123!

That is one of the reasons I quit going to these local churches and they really don't teach the truth about Gods word. They are one verse charlies with a begging bag! God didn't send out beggars. Just the opposite when the men that followed Jesus HE told them not to take a begging bag with them when they taught the word of The LORD.

I didn't give up on God and that is the most importaht thing we can do. I did find a church but it is online and this man teaches the real truth about Gods word. I have been listening to this man for years and have learned so much from his way of teaching. He teaches chapter by chapter verse by verse. http://www.shepherdschapel.com/index.htm And he don't go around asking for money he tells you when you live on a fixed income to buy and pay what you need if you have a love offering that is okay.

No, you shouldn't have quitted. Keep on searching for a church that really stands on the truth that it teaches. I did that, too, years ago, but I realized that's what the enemy wanted to happen. I know it could be confusing and disappointing sometimes but I just have to keep on. Thanks!

Oh good, but I think a church you could go to to have fellowship with other Christians would be helpful. I'd like to take a look at your link. Thanks.

The Apostle Paul was very much against selling the Gospel, he talked about it a lot in his letters, which people would know if they actually read them. But you can always tell when so-called "Christians" are using the Bible to sell stuff, God will deal with them when they die, and they'll have to answer to Him for that, because preachers are held accountable by God because they say they're speaking for Him.

Yes, how I wish and pray that they'd realize that they are held accountable for using God's word to gain money for their own benefit. Thank you, Rev.

one of the biggest scam ever. if you want to be rich.. i suggest you build a religion and use the bible to scare your people to give you money. that's why i don't have any religion right now. we don't know what's the true religion. every churches now just use religion as a front for money making scams.

@artauxeo The religion that these television people use to scam people is not true Christ-oriented religion. A lot of churches are as you say, but there are still some good ones out there. You just have to do a little looking around. I hope that you will not allow these sort of people (scammers) to hinder your belief and relationship with God.

Well don't ever get deceived! They can't use Christ for their own evil motive. We should not let our selves become willing victims of this false teachers. I never give money to these people. If Apostle Paul labored hard enough in preaching the gospel by working as tent-maker to provide for his own living, then this people if they really know the Bible should learn from Paul. I can't be cheated, I knew the fake from genuine Christianity and I hope people out there should also learn how to discern. Don't ever, ever give then any cent.

I agree. Their priority should be to preach the Gospel and let God provide for them. They are stumbling blocks for other people who want to be Christians. Thanks!

I think these events you're describing, about people entering inside buses and use religion topics to get some money, happens only in some countries. There are a lot of unemployed people that they search an income through this way. The best way to know the Gospels is them reading.

They do that here in our country. When they are asked a question why they are doing that when they should be sharing the gospel freely, most of them would keep on collecting the envelopes and rush to the exit door.

Yes, they could sell other things instead like foods, drinks, goodies, etc. It's what most people do here also. It's just so sad that there are those who are using religion or the Bible to get money from other people.

That's bad. I see they want only the money. I haven't seen such things here with us, although here a lot of people, who sell all possible small goods, are entering the buses all the time. Like as you have said, they are selling the Gospels.
