Is It About Time Ivory Was Banned From Antiques Programmes?

I'm sick of seeing ivory ornaments on programmes such as "The Antiques Roadshow" and "Flog It!" I realise that anything made of ivory proven to be from the year 1947 and earlier can be sold legitimately BUT actually showing it on television (in my view) fuels temptation in ivory itself, whether it be from that era or AFTERWARDS. To be honest, whenever I see carved ivory on television my first thought is with the elephants. I never look at a carved figure and say, "Wow, look at that, the workmanship is brilliant." How about you? Do you feel uncomfortable whenever carved ivory is shown on television and can someone tell me why 1947 is the cut-off date? This bit has always confused me somewhat.

I know you are very kind to animals all the time,so am I.It is just what I thought of,how do they determine the age of the ivory and why the ivory ornaments from the year 1947 and earlier is sold legitimately? In my opinion,if we are concerned with elephants preservation,we shouldn't set such a precedent. On no account are things made of ivory allowed to sold.

I admire Chinese carvings (and the other day I saw a Chinese-styled coffee table with a lovely, intricate design painted on it) but only on wood. It was lacquered too. Ivory is grotesque and only looks good on an elephant. It is so lovely and inspiring to know that not all Chinese people approve of the ivory trade.

I am with you on this on Jane. What makes Ivory from before 1947 right? It was still a wrong thing to do no matter when it was stolen from the elephant. Ivory products are and always were cruel. They should all be banned from being sold in my opinion. I do not watch any of those shows so I am not exposed to it, but I do think that they should not show products like that on those reality shows that might glorify the value of it.
