Glasses Contributing to Migraines - Contact Lenses?

I have astigmatism and am supposed to wear glasses for reading, computing and although they're not a necessity for driving, everything is certainly clearer when I wear them. I had an operation on my nose to alleviate breathing problems a number of years ago. The migraines I have been suffering since some time after the operation, I believe to be linked to the operation. The problem I face now is that when I wear my glasses, I get migraines more frequently and I think this may be related to the pressure they put on my nose. It has been suggested to me that I try contact lenses, but I'm extremely sensitive about anything going near my eyes, even mascara and eyeliner. Can someone provide me with some advice on using contact lenses, are they easy to manage? Are you sensitive about your eyes and how have you overcome this to put in your lenses. Finally, does anyone else suffer from migraines as a result of a surgical procedure? It's made my life hell :(

i have the same eye problem-i'm convinced it's because my up close vision is fine,i only need them for distance.i can't wear glasses all the time because i'll get headaches too.i think it strains the part of the normal vision. i've asked them repeatedly to give me bifocals with the bottom half being clear but they refuse due to my age, which is ridiculous.

that's what i told them-someone 6 or someone 90 could have the exact same vision. somehow they seem convinced i'm "too early" for bifocals.

LOL! I don't understand that! I think they should give you whatever type of glasses prescription that gives you the clearest vision at all distances, no matter what your age. My daughter has a very strong prescription, her astigmatism causes her to have blurred vision at every distance so it wouldn't surprise me if she needs lineless bifocals at a young age.

How can someone refuse you that based on your age? I can't see the correlation.

Well, you might want to go to a second eye doctor to make sure the glasses prescription is right. And if you're glasses are too small for your head that will definitely cause headaches. I have worn contacts and glasses. If you're going to wear contacts, get the soft kind. The hard lenses, the gas perms, are h*ll on the eyes. But soft contacts, you feel like you have nothing on your eyes. Once you get the hang of putting them on, you're fine. I too have astigmatism, so they make them sufficiently for people like you and me.

Thanks very much AmbiePam. Perhaps I do need new glasses with both an updated prescription (it's been a while since they were last tested) and a frame that better suits my head and nose. They're a very light pair that seem to fit well, and I've never had problems before with migraines as a result of wearing my glasses until I had the operation. With regards to contacts. Soft ones definitely sound like the more comfortable option and thank you for clarifying that they do indeed cater for astigmatism.

I don't wear glasses or contacts but were I ever to need them, I would wear contacts, probably the disposable ones you can wear up to 30 days continuously. Then it would only require once or twice a month insertion and taking them out lol. I think glasses would likely give me headaches or migraines too, the only sunglasses I can wear are ones that I can't see around the sides of the frames, that's something that would bother me with glasses. I would suggest trying a pair of contact lenses, go see your eye care professional and see if you can get a free trial so you can test them out. If they work for you, you can switch to them.

Thanks very much for your input mommyboo, I didn't know you could wear contacts up to 30 days continuously, that sounds like a great invention! I'll mention those to my optician when I go to see him soon. Thank you.

I'm shortsighted/nearsighted and I'm using contact lenses every now and then. I too am very sensitive about anything that goes near my eye, although as a man I do not use make up or any such stuff. Anyway, after first few days or a week I got used to putting on the lenses and there was no problem afterwards. They are quite easy to manage once you get used to them. Using them all the time might not be a good idea, but I'm sure it is safe if doctor will say so. It's just that my eyes get dry after few hours. Though, I think there are lenses on the market that are designed to avoid that now. I still have ones I stocked up on few years back since I do not use them that often. Anyway, I had no surgery that could result in migraines, but I tend to get strong headaches when I do not wear my glasses or lenses for a few hours during the day.

A very helpful response mdorki, thank you. It's starting to look like the only answer for me is going to be contact lenses. I would imagine that the daily lenses, although more costly would be easier to maintain and use.

I have not undergone any surgical procedures before, so I didn't feel hesitant when I decided to wear eye glasses and contact lenses. I have been wearing it many years already. At home, spectacles. And when outside, contact lenses. It gives me migraine sometimes so I have to wear either glasses or contacts alternately. You can undergo a Laser surgery on your eyes but before doing that, you have to go and have it check whether it will be better for you to undergo such eye surgery or not. This is what I can think of so you won't need to wear glasses or put contact lenses on every now and then.

I've actually had a friend who's had laser eye surgery at a reputable clinic and her experience has put me off that for life. If I can get away with contacts to correct my vision and glasses on good days without getting too many migraines I'll be happy. Thank you for your response.

i have never worn contacts before but the only advice i can give you is that all my friends who wore glasses before got them and say they're actually more comfortable then anything and they think they look better too but people should NOT fall asleep with them on cause without applying the drops needed for them can be a problem such as the lenses sticking to your eyeball and you would have a hard time removing them without scratching the eye. hoped this helped out a little.

Thanks juggal0Xx420 for your input. Didn't know that about falling asleep with them.
