I read recently some people suffer from cough because of inadequate use of humidifier at home. Doctor suggests using purified water, if not, changing water regularly to avoid negative effect from water contents.

I have COPD and I have need to use a C-Pap machine due to sleep apnea and since it force-feeds air to me I need to add water to keep from drying my airways.

No, I use de-humidifier instead. In the house where I live the humidity is rather high, and since in the winter we can't open the windows frequently, we need to use something. Too much humidity is bad too, as it can lead to mold growing on the walls, and thus can cause allergy, that's what we are trying to avoid. But when we had central heating and it was over in the rooms 26 C in the winter too (it was not under our control), we would have needed a humidifier.

My house is open to the elements as i don`t use an airconditioner and there are many windows to let in fresh air.I have never needed to use a humidifier upto now and probably never will.Yes, constant changes in weather conditions do affect but most of the time i am lucky to get away with it as i always take precautions to avoid falling ill.

I don't use one either. I have put a pot of water on the stove and boiled it until it steamed away when I was ill though. I remember when I was little that if someone in the house was sick, my grandparents had a humidifier and would put it in my room. There is actually medicine that you can add to the humidifier now.

The levels of humidity in our house would be higher than most, so I do not feel the need to increase it by using a humidifier. In our old house, it was very dry indeed and we had storage heaters which made matters worse, but I would leave a bowl of water by the radiator in each room, freshened every day or two to help with the humidity.
A lot of homes in the Netherlands have little ceramic water holders that hang off their radiators, I remember wondering what these were when I was younger. Ingenious!
