Smoking is a sin. Is it? Let me ask you something," Is disturbing someone a sin? Of course it is. So is smoking. It disturbs people around you. If you want to smoke, ask people around you if it is okay if you smoke. If they don't mind, then your smoking is not a sin. In Indonesia smokers are not considerate. They never think that smoking really disturbs others. They just keep on smoking and the stupid thing is that people who are around smokers just keep silent and never protest. You have your own right to smoke but think of others who don't smoke. You can smoke as much as you can at your own home but not in public places where there are more non smokers around.

No it isn't a sin. Depending on where you do it, it can be very rude, but as far as I know no religion says you can't disturb someone. People can disturb and annoy someone else in a 1000 different ways without even realizing it. If it isn't smoking, it's being loud, if it isn't being loud it's something else. it's just something you need to learn to deal with. Everyone has annoying habits, even you. Smoking is banned in so many places now you can only do it outside and in your own home, so it can't be that much of an issue. If that's not the case in Indonesia then that's unfortunate for you, but there's no need to call all smokers "sinners".

As I said it wasn't a sin if you ask people around you before you smoke. When we cause people to be disturbed (either you do it on purpose or not) you still sin. There is an apology like this: "Please forgive me for what did to you purposely or unintionally."

It's rude, but being rude is not a sin as far as I'm aware. It's only a sin if the religion you belong to says it's a sin. Now you could say it's a form of self-harm and that could be viewed as a sin like someone else said in this discussion, but disturbing or annoying someone is not a sin.

The smoke that you send out may kill people around. That's why I call it a sin.

If disturbing people were a sin, the entire evangelical movement would be sinful. You're going to have to rethink your flawed argument. And if smoking is a sin because it disturbs people, you need to stop drinking, eating, breathing, making any sound, moving or doing anything except sitting very, very still somewhere out of sight of absolutely everybody. That's the only way you won't disturb people.

Smoking DOES disturb non smokers, which is why in some countries smoking is banned, and those who do will fined.

It's an addiction and a legal one. I could tell without looking at your profile that you aren't from the US because here we can't smoke in any public place. Many landlords do not even allow smoking inside their rentals. You could do what people here did and band together and get some laws passed that deny smoking in public places. You got to wonder though, why is it legal to sell them?

Well, I don't know how health concious a lot of us are but we are aware of the dangers of 2nd hand smoke and do try not to bother others with it.

That's nice. Smokers in US understand and know where to smoke. Indonesian smokers should learn from American smokers. And I think most Americans are health-conscious.

I wouldn't call it a sin, but I would agree that it is ignorant of people to deliberately pollute the air that someone has to breathe. I am fortunate to live in an area that smoking in public places is banned by law, the only exception being private social clubs. The law is written so that not only would the smoker face fines, but so would the owner of the public establishment that permits the smoking. You don't realize just how clean the air is without smoke until you find yourself in a structure where smoking is permitted. I had to cover an event in a private social club, and smoking was permitted, and I must say it was quite disturbing. I was only inside for as long as necessary, and I got out of there as soon as possible. I noted that one other argument posted here was against loud music, and I too am against noise pollution. If someone wants to enjoy that thumping music that is fine, that's a protected right. Just remember that others may not share your taste in music, so turn it down and keep it in your car! Remember, we are all allowed to enjoy our rights, but not at the expense of others, that's just rude and inconsiderate.

Thank you for your comments. I thought a bit more about smoking and sin, and smoking just may be a sin. In the Bible, specifically 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, it discusses that the body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit, which you have from God, and that you are not your own. With reference to that passage, and given the fact that smoking serves no purpose other than to release nicotine into the body, as well as toxins in the smoke, one could see smoking as desecrating the temple. There is no question that smoking is hazardous to your health, and it causes physical changes in the body. I have seen the lungs of a smoker at autopsy, and they are significantly decimated when compared to non-smoking lungs. That would certainly raise the question of smoking being a sin. Different faiths also have different expectations of followers and different definitions of sin. So given the Bible's description of the body as a temple, and considering other religions beliefs, I would have to say that smoking may very well be a sin.

smoking should be a sin because it definitely harm people's health both the smokers and non-smokers. there was a study made in Japan where scientists observed a family consisting parents who smoke in their home and their child around 6 years old. the family had a lung check-up and the results was bad. a healthy lungs that doesn't have any contact with smoke should have a clear image(an xray-like machine was used) and on a smoker's lungs shows black dots which is the nicotine. and sadly the 6 year old kid had as much nicotine or black dots in his lungs as his parents had.

Disturbing someone is not a 'sin'. It may be a 'not nice' thing to do, but it is not a sin. A sin would be more or less defined in my book as going against one of the rules set out by the particular God/gods that you look up to. For me 'Thou Shalt Not Disturb' is not in the 10 Commandments, so I won't agree that it is a sin. As a smoker, I find myself to be very considerate, to the point where if a non-smoker enters my house, I will smoke out my window or up the chimney of the fire place. If there are children, I do not let them see me smoke, I will go outside. If someone with health issues is in my house, I will go outside and smoke. It does not bother me to do so. In Ireland, we are led to believe smoking is a sin. We have the 'smoking ban' here, where you may only smoke outside, in open areas and not in a place of work. I completely agree with it if I'm honest. Just because I smoke, that does not mean that others should have to inhale the noxious gases I choose to force down my own neck.

Smoking will cause others to suffer and die because of its deadly poision contained in the smoke inhaled by non smokers. See what I mean? Which is why I call it a sin because it may kill others.

i dont think that smoking is a sin per se, but sure is not healthy for your body and we are supposed to view our body as a temple and smoking sure messes up that temple. Here where i live in North America, they are really clamping down on smokers which is good for those of us who have health issues that involve the lungs.

"Sin" seems to be a serious word. But smoking is a very harmful thing. It not only ruin your health, but also other's ehalth. The second hand smoking is suffering and it is unfair for the people who don't smoke at all. I love China

I smoke outside, so it's ok. You shouldn't blame "smoking" if you are complaining about disrespectful smokers. I think people arround disrespectful smokers should complain, but people are afraid to complain becouse most of the times smokers are apathetic and stubborn with it .

As I read this, I am craving one. I might have to go outside and smoke a quick cig after I read this. . Having said that, NO, smoking is not a sin! Not in my world anyway. I agree that you should definitely ask the people around you if it's okay to smoke around them, but if you are outside, it shouldn't matter. Here in the U.S. - most indoor places (with the exception of the casino) are smoke-free environments. We can't smoke in hotels, in bars, at work, at the shopping mall, etc - so literally the only place we are allowed to smoke is outside. Or in our own homes. I'm a smoker but I don't smoke in my house - I find that gross.

If all smokers in Indonesia behaved like you do, I think there would no complaint from non smokers as no one smoked around them. What happens in my country that all smokers never think of others who do not smoke. They smoke in public places. Thank for responding.

If smoking is sin, drinking is a sin as well, the same goes for driving. If smoking kills, drink driving and drunkards are killing more people than smoking. I don't understand why are smokers being targeted just because of the smoke? Does inhaling fumes from vehicles make us any healthier? How about inconsiderate drivers who don't bother about cleaning their filters, exhaust pipes, resulting in black smoke emitted? The same goes for drinking, people who drink and drive, when they caused accident, they simply sped off, which is more inconsiderate?

smoking is without a question a sin just because a person is harming an organ of himself, which is a creation of our almighty father in heaven and as well a gift that should be taken care of and to be used properly for its purpose.

some people are insensitive. They do what they want without thinking the opinion of others around them. It's a freewill. If you are tough enough to tell them to get away because ur inhaling the smoke, do so..but if you are hesitant, just keep quiet and cover your nose. Some people are educated but not cultured, these smokers u get to deal with are just typical example.I smoke but let's say I am a responsible smoker hehe. chill out. ;-)

For me, nothing is sin. We live the way we like in tune with our surroundings. For everything we do, there is a justification for Yes/No. I don't think it is a sin. I never smoked in my life time, only thing, I don'd like smoking. If we get some kind of pleasure and if we assure that it will not hurt anyone, just go for it. That is all.

For me, i don't think smoking is a sin. But, others would consider it as a sin since a smoker is basically slowly killing himself. Regarding about disturbing others, i think there are rules in various countries about smoking in public. In my place, we are given smoking areas so that we could not harm the noon-smokers.
