Advanced Rent Payments in Apartments with a Catch

United States

On Feb. 22, 2012 I just recertified for another year in my apartment, and last year i've been doing advanced rent payments paying for the month i'm paying, plus 2 extra months so I can let my money stack up to repeat the payment for the next 3 months. However, I didn't know that there was a catch such as credit when doing advanced rent payments. Now I have to pay $90 dollars as one of the assistant landlords are writing off the $50 dollars. I didn't know about it when I first moved in last year until today when I got finished doing my recertification paper-signing and dating, and I wasn't familiar with it at all! She said that it doesn't matter if I did the payments for 2, 3, 4 months or longer, that it was okay and up to me to decide how much I could pay as long as I paid it, and it was a bit much to wrap my head around since I heard about it a FEW MINUTES AGO. Something tells me that I now have to be careful about it. Is there any other info available that I can look over, and if any of you also do advanced rent payments as I do when renting an apartment, did y'all have the same experience?

Okay I am a bit confused. When I think Credit I think that it will go towards next months payments, but your saying you have to pay $90.00 and they are writing off $50.00 of it? is this for tax purposes? I'd be curious to know and hope your not getting cheated.

Believe me, i'm just as confused about this as you are. However, I have to see someone who's been through this, because, again, I just heard about it today. I hope I don't get cheated too though.

Well Good Luck. I had to look at your location before I responded, and I know your just a state below me. I don't understand why it wouldn't credit like we both think it should, but hoping you can get some explanation on it and if the apartment complex is trying to cheat you finding tenants who've been done the same way will be beneficial.

I never heard of advanced rent payments. You have to be very lucky if you are earning enough money to pay several months rent in advance. Most people can't even come up with the current rent.
