Tail docking can be very common practice in several breeds. Tail docking is the amputation of part or most of the tail of a dog (varies by breed). This should be done by a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of the puppies birth. As for reasons that people dock tails some are done for working purposes, i.e hunting dogs running throuh dense brush or fitting into small spaces. Dogs that are at risk for tail damage in the future to save the dog from a later tail amputation that can be a difficult and painful surgery later in life.
