did any of mylotters have any knowledge about dvd-rom drive? My dvd-drive is giving me a hard time. It was detected by my computer and i can eject and close the drive, but the dvd/cd won't read and the disc won't spin. I tried to disassemble and putting it all back together. after that i tested it again and the drive spin for few second then it stop again. Then i do that again and the drive spin for another few second then it stop again. Did anyone can help me here? did anyone know what cause the dvd-drive not spinning the disc? is there a way to test the dvd-rom drive without a PC because i want to test the dvd-rom is working or not without constantly turning on and off my PC.... please don't suggest me to buy another dvd-rom or try to contact technician because i want to learn a little bit about hardware...

as a technician i would say that the lens might be a bit dirty try cleanig it with a sift cloth and test it...if it still wont work then the optical lens might be at fault...and the only way to fix it is to replace it with a new lens which i wont recommend because it is much cheaper to buy a new one that to repair it....

must be a misaligned optics...try adjusting the small knobs near the optics most of it are located under the optics...

No, i don't think it's the optic, because sometimes it can read, but then there's this lag/jump sound that make the reading stops. I think it was the mechanical, but it's fine now.

I'd say there's not much you can do. Practically the whole dvd-drive is one big electronic circuit. If you have no knowledge of that then you're in for a hard time trying to learn about hardware. Besides you're probably going to need the appropriate tools as well. Try searching online for the dvd-drive service manual, I've never looked for manuals about this kind of stuff, so I'm not sure if you can find them for free. But a service manual is usually the way to go with this things.

Thank's magester1, i'll try to find the manual on the web, but don't worry i got my dvd-rom working again now. i don't know what i'm doing but i disassemble all the part as much as i can and i put it back together and suddenly the dvd is working again now... ha ha... i don't have to buy a new one just yet...

Sad to say my friend, but i think your dvd rom has malfunctioned, probably mechanical or the ic circuitry. There are a lot of video tutorials on youtube, basic troubleshooting, etc. Nero has a software to test dvd rom drives, but with the symptoms you have been seeing, it is broken as it happened to me twice and i have opted for a replacement.

Yes, buying a new one would be next in my "to do list", but maybe there's something that we can do if the problem is not ic circuit... maybe it's just a connector problem, or soldering problem, or lubricant problem etc.
