I don't know if you are accustomed to not eating and drinking for 14 hours or so. What I know when you abstain from eating and drinking is that your body will use your stored fat for fueling, thus it is good for you to lose weight. During fasting, the increase of proteins occur to protect cells from stress. There is also improvement in insulin sensitivity. Brain works better as its neurons are protected from stressors, and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases. Therefore, fasting is good when you have a brain injury. If you are to sit for an exam, you can fast to improve learning.

I know it is not easy to start fasting. Before fasting you had better find more info about fasting in the internet.

Actually, about losing fat I heard and learnt the opposite - that when you are starving the body switches to emergency mode, and rather keeps the fat. But your information is interesting, and I have no doubt fasting can have an amazing effect on the brain. Fasting 14 hours at night is not hard... but one of the main reasons I respect Muslims so much for fasting in Ramadan is because they do it from sunrise to sunset daily, in one of the hottest months of the year.

I don't think this would be good for me, to be honest. I prefer to keep my blood sugars reasonably balanced and I don't think it's good to try to trick my body into using stored fat...my brain is made up of fat! Of course, everyone's metabolism is different, so what works for me might not work for you, and what works for you might not work for me. What works for me is to eat a small amount every couple of hours. This way I don't get really hungry.

Well, it's best to consult with your doctor regarding this, to be sure. All doctors know the benefit of fasting. Follow what your doctor advises you to be on the safe side, of course.

are you fasting for religious purpose yanzalong? well i have tried not eating and drinking for more than 24hours before. i think i did it more than once. it's hard to admit but my purpose was punishing myself for doing something wrong. i don't want to elaborate but i thought depriving myself from food and water would be one of the worst punishment for myself. i don't recommend it at all and i'm not doing it anymore. the only good effect was i slimmed down which wasn't my purpose for doing so.

I do fasting both for religious purposes and for health purposes too. Both bring about good effect to my health. You, know I used to hate fasting. When it was a fasting month, I didn't fast. So to eat during the day time was something that would humiliate me when I was caught red handed not fasting.

I am pretty sure that when your body use the store fats in your body is not good. The by product of using the stored body fats is ketones. Which is really bad. When I am so hungry and doing my exam or listening to my teacher, my head gets hurt a lot and I cannot concentrate and fail my job.

Does it count when you sleep all those 14 hours? I sometimes have a very difficult week and when I finally get to rest on Sunday I can sleep for around 12 hours. I've gone 14 hours or more without eating nor drinking before, it's not hard at all, at least for me.

That includes your sleeping time, too. I once tried 24 hour fasting with water. I only drank distilled water. I started early in the morning and finsih my fasting next morning. I felt weak but I carried on.

I don't really agree with not eating for that amount of time, unless it is during the night when you're asleep anyway. If you're going about your daily business during the course of the day, you might find that you have to eat otherwise you might start to feel dizzy and weak as you wouldn't have enough energy to get you through the day. You will burn the same number of calories whether you eat everything at once or whether you eat it over the course of a day, so you should eat at regular intervals to ensure that your blood sugars stay at a healthy level for you.

Fasting from food, is actually the WORST way to be loosing weight. If you eat nothing for 14 hours, then your body will go into starvation, so the majority of the next food you eat, will not be processed, but go directly into storage.... aka, that fat around your belly. Also, if you don't eat for long periods of time, you can make conflicts with your blood sugars, and that can make people very moody and upset. A much, much better way to be loosing weight, is to keep track of your calories, and eat at regular intervals, a total of 1500-2000 calories per day (depending on your height, weight, gender, etc...). If you fast for 14 hours of the day, and are only eating 1000 calories, then you will loose weight, but your body can go through some serious shocks, that can even lead to life threatening problems. Don't fast your weight off, it's not good for you, just watch what you eat, and exercise!

Fasting is good I agree, but one should check their health or consult a doctor first before doing it. I do fast, I even tried it for a whole day. I did it once for 3 days - only with water. It helps a lot to detoxify our body from toxins.

Nah that doesn't seem too healthy to say the very least. Both for myself and for the people around me. If I don't eat for that long, my temper tends to rather get rather short. And when my temper gets rather short, there are just a lot of people who really have a bad time to really be around. Not to mention that every single time that I miss breakfast, that without fail, I am unable to concentrate on any little thing whatsoever. So my brain does work better with food and fourteen hours is a very long time to go without food or water or any kind of drink. That is more than a half of the day and that really is not something that I would do. Physically it might do good, maybe, but I skeptical. On my mood however, that is really just something that is going to be entirely different to say the very least. It is just going to be something that is going to be frustrating me, the lack of eating.

I won't recommend doing that to lose weight or improve performance. IT's not good nor healthy at all. For those who are not used to hunger, they might faint any moment when fatigue takes over. Some of my friends who are body builders, they tried not to drink water for at least 24-48 hrs before a competition so that their muscles would look tight and compact. However, he stressed that it's not good but in order to win, he has no choice. I would never do that for sure. If i want to lose weight, i would exercise enough to burn off those calories instead.

I know most of the people do the fast not only 14 hours but some persons not drink the water full day and not eating food also. No if you are sit for exam and you are on fast you cannot pay the attention on study. Without eating you can not pay the attention on study.

I don't know about this. But I think, knowing your body's limits is quite difficult. One must be careful to do excessive fasting or it will surely affect their performance. Maybe there is that fine line between performing good when fasting and performing poorly during the time your body don't eat. But that fine line can be dangerous and beneficial at the same time. The problem lies on when to know that you already reached the good performance part when not eating and when you will reach the bad performance part when not eating.

If you never fast, you can start slowly. For example, you start with 5 or six hours without eating and drinking. Have your breakfast at 6 am and after that you abstain from food and drink till 12. At 12:10 you can have your lunch and do not eat and drink for the next 6 hours. If you think you can do it well you can increase the duration till you are able to fast for 14 hours. Moslems fast 14 hours/day for 30 days once a year.

It's known that eating less or eating vegetables only helps you to live longer, a few years longer. But would you rather live a few years longer depriving yourself of all the things you'd like to eat but didn't, or live a few years less knowning you have been happy, you never missed anything you felt to eat? Also, living a few years longer is a hard bet, you could still live less because of accidents, because they happen. I'm very skinny, underweight actually, sometimes I don't feel like eating at all so I don't, 14 hours of not eating did happen, my record was 2 days of not eating (because I didn't feel to). I do drink a lot though, not drinking for 14 hours did happen a few times too, but it's rare. I usually drink A LOT! Lots and lots of water, maybe that explains why I don't feel like eating for 14 hours sometimes or even 2 days that time, drinking lots of water is known to "cheat" the mind to make you feel full when you actually are not. Thing is, I think NOBODY! should depraving himself of food or anything, if you see a plate of lasange (or whatever is your favorite dish) and feel like eating it, DO IT! You might think it damages your health, but your humor counts too, if you are not happy you're not healthy either. Of course a thing is eating a few plates of lasagnes sometimes (good!), another thing is going to MCdonald everyday (or REALLY often) and eating like a pig (bad!).

I have never fasted for 14 hours and I dont think I could. I need to for a few days though because I am overweight and I thik that might help. The problem that I have is will power. If I have a bag of chips in front of me instead of eating just a handful of chips and then quiting, I have to eat the whole bag. I did not know the benefits of fasting either.

Yes, maybe fasting can give us some good effects, like what you said, "improve brain functions". But don't overdo it. I know some people, whose brains were damaged, they got insane because of fasting. They got mentally ill. So, just do it in moderation.
