If you were on the job and noticed a co-worker stealing, do you feel it is your place to keep silent or to tell a supervisor or boss?

I would definitely tell, because it's still stealing either way and if you let it go by, then it's also your fault and in a way, you kind of stole too. At my job, we have a hotline we can call to report theft of any kind. They investigate and if they find your claim to be true and catch the person, you get a reward. There are a few types of stealing besides the obvious stealing items. Theft can also include doing paperwork incorrectly.

I work in a store. A few years back, I caught a co-worker stealing. She was off the clock and I was the only one working. The first time, I let it go thinking and hoping that I was seeing things wrong. It's a really awkward spot to be in. The second time it happened, I said something to her. I liked the girl and just didn't want to have any part in what she was doing. Still, I could lose my job if it is known that I turn a blind eye to this sort of thing. I told her how I felt and then asked her to please not come in on my shift and do this stuff because it puts me in the position of feeling as if I HAVE to say something. Well, she continued and I did say something to my boss. She was lucky....she got a warning and she also called me up asking me if I was the one to turn her in. I told her that I was.Amazingly, we remained friends afterwards. She knew that she was wrong and she also knew me well enough to know that it was really hard to report her.

I'm with 3honor on this one - stealing is stealing, theft is theft. It is morally wrong and it is a crime. In this situation, once I was sure, I would certainly report it.
