Optimizing your search engine listings.

I have two websites. One is my writing blog where I promote and discuss my own writing. The other is for advertising my other craft work mainly wood turnings. Both of them are easy to find through Google but neither one of them even come up through the Yahoo search engine. Even if you put in the actual web address it will say no results. I don't have to be on the top of all lists as far as I'm concerned but I would at least like to show up. Is there a way for me to exist on these search engines without shelling out a lot of money. I can't get any traffic from those sources if they don't see me as existing.
