I notice many external portable hardisk available in the market. Start from old player in hardisk industry like western digital and seagate which have existed in the market for so long and also brand like toshiba, samsung and many more anonymous brands. The hardisk capacity is also vary, hardisk with 1TB capacity is easy to find and slowly replacing 500GB storage which popular in market, the price perGB seems also cheaper if we buy higher storage capacity. However, I think we should ask ourselves about the main purpose we buy those, if we feel 500GB is more than enough maybe we don't need to buy higher capacity ones. I personally don't recommend less than 500GB like 250 or 350 Gb since the price is quite close with 500GB.. How about you? Do you have any recommended or tips to buy external hardisk? Maybe you can share your personal experience with your external hardisk.

Do you mean external hard drives? It is definitely much less expensive to buy storage nowadays. I bought a 500 GB backup hard drive about 2 years ago, but turned out to never really need it (so far). I really only had about 30 gb of good content and about 100 gb of experimental work. I think I should have just compressed my data into multiple flash drives....maybe that would be cheaper.

Well, you are right.. the brand speak for themselves..Even though Toshiba and Samsung are famous in other electronics and appliances but Seagate and WD are both senior in hardisk industry..That was really awesome choice…really appreciate your response..

Although I never had the experience and the necessity of having an external hard drive, can I still give you some news, as some people I known, I have bought. First, they have been focused on the capacity of 1TB. Also because proportionately than 500GB, the price is cheap. As for brands, very good in my opinion, Toshiba and Western Digital. For example, my aunt bought a Lacie (not sure if you've never heard of), he used very little, but he said that however she found good. In my opinion 1TB is convenient, although maybe a 500GB would be enough for you. The extra space could still be useful. As for prices I can not give you info, as I speak of Italy, I know that in other countries, these prices are different, especially in the U.S..

Well, you are right… I agree with you, 1 TB seems convenient and will be worth in the long run..However, seems the 1TB too much space and the price still quite high compare with those 500GB..I think should be comparable on every country since they will apply almost same price from the vendor..well, I think will go for western digital this time around..since the size and looks also really cute, it has come with hard cover as well…really appreciate your response..

Hi there Omchesunche, Wow you know a lot about hard disk's I do agree with all of the things that you said why buy something for twice the capacity for just a close difference in price, get the bigger one and enjoy more hard disk space, the older we get the more data we store the more we need that space so invest on a bigger capacity HD now...

Well, I have done research by googling..I think every one will be easier to survey before decided to buy something..you are right, I prefer to have more space with almost similar price rather than buy another one in future.. I hope it will be long lasting and maintain to protect from viruses..If the data damage then could be disasters for me..I agree with you, it just like investment for long run usage..while keep the space available for us.. really appreciate your response..

I would have recommendedyou a SSD (Solid State Drive), which are the best and most stable drives you can find, but regarding you want it for big storing capacity, I guess Western Digital would be the best choice. A Western Digital 1Tb is at arround $100. Seagate is also good, but I think WD is the best choice. You have to take into consideration the transfer rate, as well as the storage space.

Well, that was good idea..the SSD would be recommended with latest technology.. yes, maybe I would prefer to buy WD (western Digital)..you are right, that was close in my country, 1TB about $100 either..Seagate and WD are both old player in hardisk and could be best choice for hardisk lover..Well, the transfer rate will be great if we have SATA now..you are right, it should be considered as well along with the storage space.. really appreciate your response..

I personally prefer Wester Digital, although I'm sure you won't have any trouble with other well knowns brands. About the size, I'd say if you need 500 go for 750 or something like that. You never realize how much you need until you don't have it, and it's always more than you initially though.

Well, you are right.. I think western digital is old player in hardisk industry along with Seagate, long time ago we have Maxtor and quantum but I don’t think still exist in the market..The Japanese brand like Toshiba and Korean Samsung seems offer nice feature and comparable price but maybe I prefer stick to the existence brand in storage market..Well, you are right..we will always need more and more storage than our requirement when first buy it..so better to buy twice the first requirement then.. Really appreciate your response..
