water's been polluted in my area???

this morning, i started to brush my teeth, filled my cup with water,then stange smell came out of the cup.i thought the cup was dirty and should have been washed ,then i took a taste of the water,gosh,,,,it's the water that should be washed,not the cup! i smells like in the hospital,i started to realize that there might be more chemistry thing put in to purify the water. my city is filled with many lakes and two long rivers passed by,the very big city in the mid-china,never lack of water. when i tried to search some news ,but except some forums,people sharing the same smelly water experience, no official news telling us exact news about how was the river been polluted, how serious, is it still in control or not... and i don't think much more chemistry thing been put in the water woundn't effect our body ~ does it safe? would it be easy oxidize our body? i'm worrying,,,
