Have you heard of Hongkong? Can you imagine it is a city of China although Hongkong is far more developed than the other cities? The chief executive of Hongkong have been investigated by the ICAC in Hongkong. This is the first time for the ICAC to investigate their only superior since they are found. You can not imagine that will happen in other cities of China. I am so shamed to say that, because I am from Shanghai in China. I don't understand why our political system is so bad and why the leader can learn something useful from Hongkong. Do you have something to share with us? please.

Well it could be because it was only recently that Hongkong became a part of China? It was previously run by the British government. While in Shanghai, it has been a part of China from ever since. Am I right? But, I hear that Shanghai is fast developing as a city.

Shanghai become one of the best city in Asia, but it is just a fast developing city in the economical side. And its political system is the same with other cities in China. I also believe Hongkong has benefitted from the British government. What confuse me is that why it is so difficult for our leader to admit their mistake before and make some improvement now. It is so sad.

Yes. I don't know the feeling of the Hongkong citizens when Hongkong return to China in 1997. Maybe it is very complicated.

As you know, Hong Kong had been ruled by UK before. At the beginning it seemed to be a shame and bad thing. Many years go by, now I don't really regard it as a bad thing. At least Hong Kong has more freedom than here. You can access to any websites in Hong Kong. The people are nice. Perhaps this is because they have a better education, I am not sure. Perhaps the laws really work for them. Everybody follows it. I love China

HK had been through several decades of free market system and less retrictive political system while under the British rule. Their people are given much free hand to utilize, expand their free enterprise-spirit and entrepreneurship by a supportive British mayor in their island. Their natural hard working ethic and business savvy instinct couple with much freer political environment and liberal economy policy had created a modern and well developed city not just in China but also all of far east region even though it is just a tiny sea port island at that time. It is not an incident such a miracle can happen if ample opportunity is available to the hardworking HK Chinese and individual is allowed to prosper through own effort. Unfortunately, after the hand over of sovereigty to China, the communist party doesn't hold the same political and economy belief as the British ruler anymore. Political and economy policy of the communist party often only benefit the well connected businessmen and party stalwart intead of ordinary people and commoners in HK It is not because your leader can not learn somethings useful from HK, it is because they are not interested and believe in the common good and prosperity HK achieved so far that is of benefit to their own and family members. Anything that benefit common and avarage people is not good for the communist twisted political struggles.

It's just my opinion but since Hong Kong has been run in a Western-like manner for quite some time, maybe your government officials didn't see it befitting to how mainland China is run and governed. But I agree with you that leaders should always try to see and learn from things that have proved to be successful, and try to apply those things to other places or things that need a bit of improvement.

You are absolutely right. The things that have proved to be successful deserve to be learned by either the government or the public.

A lot of cities can be a lot different from other cities even if they are of the same country. There are many factors and elements that could affect this, the local government, resources available, commerce, and more. One other reason that Hong Kong is a different from other cities in China could be because of the influence it has been under since it was governed by British government before.
