what's a love interest?

does a love interest mean the same as a lover? what exactly love interest mean? I failed to find a convincing meaning of this phrase anywhere else on the internet so I turn to my lot.

Love interest - maybe that you would be interested in exploring a relationship with someone. A potential mate for yourself. Love - I believe would mean someone your with, someone who you are in a relationship with intimately.
