My doctor´s appointment was a success.

I came back from a stay in the country because I had a doctor´s appointment. He was another oncologist, but I wanted to ask him lots of questions that I don´t have time to ask my own oncologist. Besides I went with my daughter and she had her own set of questions too. He confirmed that the treatment was the right one and the results very good. But I now understood why I did not have much energy and what to expect from some minor pains I had. Now I can do whatever I want until May, but he also told me that part of my troubles had to do with lack of exercise and some extra kilos. So next week I´ll go check a place where to do some exercise with other people. I cannot do it all alone. Does that happen to everyone or is it just me?

I'm glad things are looking up for you, been a while since I seen you here, hope everything else is going well for you. Yes, that is typical for cancer patients to be lethargic, but the people I know just force themselves to keep moving as it helps keep a good circulation going in their bodies. One lady I know has cancer all through her body but she's really tough, she had it for 13 years. She has a very strong will to live and said she'll do anything to make it to her son's graduation, even if she has to drag herself there. I think he's graduating from high school either this June or next June. Hang in there, I know you're tough Also, good to see you post, I was thinking of you.

THe doctor told me that this lack of energy was due to chemo, but chemo ended last November with my lymphoma on remission. So now I will just have to gain strenght as my hair grows back I´m thinking of vacations now, not about dragging myself through life. In March I´m expecting a mylot friend who will visit me with her 2 children.

I did not lose weight nor appetite with chemo, but had to be on a strict diet while on it. I had very low white blood cell counts and platelet and I still do although not so bad. I have to be on antibiotics for the rest of my treatment (2 years if all goes well). It seems that not all chemotherapy is done with the same meds. I have a lymphoma and had R-CHOP.

Chemo has many side effects other than lack of energy and going bald. My brother is currently on it and he has lost his appetite. It seems that nothing makes him hungry anymore, not even his favorite recipes. His white blood cell count is very low, so does his platelet count. I wonder if alternative medicine ever crossed your mind. We're taking it as an option if his body can't withstand chemo. I'm very glad that you were able to complete all the cycles.

if you visited "ahrq.gov" you probabely know what are the important questions to ask the doctors. If you have problems , questions are the answers. 10 important questions can be found at "ahrq.gov/questions". I hope you have the time reading them and even brows that website for more. "ahrq.gov" is a huge website with too much clinical information. About exercise , maybe you can watch funny videos and laugh hard for the exersice ? Laughing is even a way to deal with illness and it can burn calories. I guess you can even laugh with youtube videos or just remember funny things. Take your time and the laugh will be there.

This oncologist had all the time in the world to give me. My father was a professor of his parents, one of my closest friends is a close friend to his mother and he is a chum to another of my closest friend´s son. He was willing to explain in detail and he knew I had to take my time. Besides I have been studying about my type of cancer since I was diagnosed. Not to worry, friend. I´m surrounded by doctor friends. I could even joke with the doctor asking him whether he thought I should buy a coffin or an air ticket for vacations.

That's very good and I hope your doctor is the best expert around , knowing the best ways to deal with your illness. Did you check the list of questions ? Your responsibility is to ask all of them and even make some new ones. I am sure you have studied all about your illness but did you also learn about ways to deal with it ?

I went to the doctor before I saw them. But as the doctor was someone I knew, he explained in detail even things I did not ask. I always have the best doctors when I´m ill as I have many doctor friends and my father was a renowned chilean scientist.

I am rather lazy when it comes to excercise, but I try to use my imagination and add some extra movements here and there during the day. Stretching is great for one´s well being, and it can be done before getting up from bed. Walking is a good excercise - especially if you can do it in the nature. Cleaning the house is great too, I do it a little at a time. Working in the garden is an enjoyable training - lots of fresh air and sun!! Just do something you enjoy, why not put on some nice music and dance a little?

I´m checking some of the music I like to do a little bending, although I know that it will hurt a bit. But I will not give up on nice things and that includes a reasonable decent body for my age. Today I did some walking and I hope I will be able to do it every day.

I only know what I have seen in yoga class, we have two women who have had cancer treatments and when they first came in the class it wsa very difficult for them but now the woman who has been there three years does as well or better than any of us. So yes it is slow, after all you poisoned your body and now it must recover as it can.

My oncologist told me that I needed an evaluation of a proffesional prior to do any sort of gymnastics. I was thinking about Pilates. Meanwhile I will start walking. I´m quite lazy and being a computer addict doesn´t help

It isn't just you because I know that Tom hasn't had the energy that he used to have since he underwent his chemotherapy and radiation. However, he is finally starting to act a little bit more like his old self, yes, he still does have a lot of fatigue, but his attitude is better than it was and he is starting to have more energy. Now, with the weight, he has lost a lot through his treatments because of nausea during the chemotherapy and then the burning from radiation in his throat and mouth made it very difficult for him to eat.

I'm glad to hear that your doctor's appointment was a success and that you can do whatever you wish until may. It is a nice that you got all your questions answered and if excercise is going to benefit you then you really must push yourself to do it even if you have to do it alone. I'm not very motivated either if I have to do exercise alon. Maybe you could find a gym buddy so that both of you can motivate each other to do exercise...

Many friends have offered to take walks with me, but none of them can really do it more than once in a while. The city I live in is too big and we are not near each other. I will do my best though because tummy grease bothers me and doesn´t look nice either

Personally, I don't mind exercising alone...I walk my dogs everyday either with or without my daughter or husband or both...I guess you could say I have the dogs for company...I do however prefer to go to a gym with someone but if I must go alone, I will.

I am glad that you got your questions answered and everything is going well. I think one of the hardest things is to find a doctor that "has the time" to answer your questions and to use terms that aren't all out medical terminology. I actually studied a little terminology once because I was mad at a doctor. Take care and best of luck...oh...I think I could use the exercise too..I don't even like walking to the car sometimes. I hear it actually gives you more energy when you exercise.

I have become a very lazy lady, but I cannot blame it all on the lymphoma. A lot of it is my addiction to my computer. The doctor I went to see is someone I know so he had all the time in the world even though I was not his patient.

Hi marguicha... Nice to hear that you are able to do whatever you wish until May but i do wish that the time span should be more enough. So, as the doctor has said that you should gain much energy by exercise, you should proceed without thinking a lot and wish you to have here more more time. Have a nice time.

I have to go every 3 months for 2 years for a dose of monoclonal antibodies. That is supposed to maintain the tumor still. My lymphoma is not one the gets cured, but a very slow grower, specially if the response to chemo is good as mine was.

walking alone is great - just walking is good for you
its great that your dr's appointment was a success, it is always great when we have a dr we can tlk to about our concernss big or small. now that you know the problem, do you have any exercizes in mind to do ? i think if you will just incoporate a long walk in your day it will help alot.. i try to walk every day, i dont know about you but i have a great place at home to walk as well as the county park and an indoor pavillion. to keep costs down i usualy just walk here close to the house, i will walk around the block or to kroger and back, if i walk to kroger i try to treat myself to an ale 8. a drink only made in ky that i love.. it inspires me to walk and on the days that i cant walk i can really tell a difference in how it makes me fill. recently i started a group of kids selling in our neighberhood selling baked goods for the proceeds to go to the animal shelter. and so far we have done good, plus i get to walk and having the kids to walk with me ,makes it easier as well.. do you have a group you can get with to walk daily it will really help you even if you have to go by yourself or take your dog.. i believe that much in walking, i have lost about 25 pounds walking as well.. and not just walking but staying busy as well always on the go and i eat what i want never on a diet and have lost a ton of weight just staying busy... i wish you well on your journey and good luck..

Dear marguicha My experiences with the doctors too say a similar story. The one who is my regular doctor is a professional, and much sought after - people believe he is a safe set of hands for my illness. This is one reason, I go to him even though he is 1200 kilometers away. But as life turns out with such people, he is quite busy and doesnt have time to explain. To many, there is no need to know beyond what the doctors say, but to some, we have questions and also need to know how things are (maybe because of our temptation for knowledge about ourself or even for the sake - if all being advised is correct). And such people go for seeking information from other sources. I appreciate you and your daughter opting for the second opinion. But just a mention - Be careful. The doctors are quite trained in the art of hooking on others' clients. So if you are not too sure, one you are seeing might tell you the treatment is not going the right way or any other ways. Luckily, your consulting doctor seem to be a good person. Please follow the advice of getting on with exercises. Find the ones which are right for you and go for them

I am very happy with my doctor but I went to see this doctor before I even met my own doctor. He could not treat me as fast as I wantedbecause he was changing hospitals so I did not stay with him. But he is the son of a couple I know and a chum to one of my best friends´ son. So he´s has treated me in a very special way and told his mother to tell me that he was at my service. I hope next week I will start checking on places where I may exercise and that are within my means.

I'm sure you can put in some extra weight and find some sort of exercise with other people cause you are a brave woman. So what workout are you planning? Pick one that's not too strenuous if I may give my advice.

Hi marguicha, If doing some exercise will benefit you and help you with your health, I guess you really have to do it - alone or not. I am sure you will be able to do it. But in case you need an instructor to guide, you can at least go to the gym.

I am lazy too. Specially with this lack of energy PLUS an adiction to computers. It´s difficult to begin exercising. That´s why I want to go where other people are doing it.
