Fighting Fear

I'm terrified of cockroaches, properly phobic. So we got a colony of roaches to feed some of our lizards. It did nothing to allay my irrational fears. I'm petrified of flying, the plane took off on Friday and I spontaneously burst into tears, and had just about stopped when I started again with landing tears. Turkeys. They're another thing I'm mortally afraid of, except when there's one on my plate at Christmas - nom! The one that I did overcome to an extent is arachnophobia. House spiders still scare me and although I can't do it without breaking a sweat, I'm able to pick up a tarantula as well as feed and care for the few pet ones that we have here in the house. What are you afraid of, however silly it may seem? Have you challenged yourself to confront your fears? Has it helped?

Hi TheIrishClog, You sound pretty brave to me with your love of animals and all creatures great and small! I wouldn't be so brave as to keep any at home, not knowingly anyway!! As for me, I don't like spiders but wouldn't go so far as to say that I'm afraid of them. Hairy creatures neither like them Hairy Mollies and I don't like centipedes or earwigs. I wouldn't say that I'm terrified of them though. I think the thing that I am most afraid of is losing the love of my children. Without saying too much but without being vague either (I don't mean to be rude) I am going through a hell of a time with my separation and it's extremely messy as far as my ex and our kids are concerned. I couldn't bear to lose the love of my kids. IrishGal77 :)

Hairy Mollies - we know them as God's Horses lol Sorry to hear of your current family situation, I wish you all the strength in the world. Don't worry about losign the love of your children IrishGal, the bond between a mother and child is the strongest that there is and it takes a heck of a lot to break that xxx

I love bugs of all sorts so they don't scare me. But what i am afraid of is Heights and being alone in a totally dark place. I would go crazy if i didn't have a light. I don't go out into nature as being afraid of getting lost and being alone in the dark. I have tried to make my room dark and stay in it but i always panic and turn a light on.

My child has almost no fear. He is afraid of heights and I'm glad, otherwise he is the type of child who would ride his bike off the roof, or jump from the roof into a swimming pool.

Well I hate any bugs that can sting. Especially wasps. Then again, given some of the things that I have read about wasps, where they can sting you over and over again, until they really mess you up, unlike bees who lose their stinger in one go...yeah that is not something pleasant to talk about. I think that most of my fears come from researching things that I shouldn't be researching. You learn too much and not all of it is pleasant. Of course, the great deal of fears tend to be connected to rather real life things like not being able to save someone from dying if I was the only one that could or things like that. I think that if I got confronted by some phobias, I might be rather nervous. I think that I can face my fears. And promptly find a way to walk around them.

Stinging is definitely something that gives me the heebyjeebies. I'm like you, I read up on a lot of stuff I should probably just put to the back of my mind as opposed to trying to learn as much as I can about them. Knowledge is the base of a lot of my fears! Then again, silliness is the base of quite a few of them too...

I was then afraid of being in the dark and usually sleep with the lights on. i have had frequent nightmares and when i wake up with the lights off, i would feel more anxious. Then later out finding the best way to fight fear is to face it, so i just started going to dark places with friends then eventually going to sleep with the lights off.

Well done to you for working through your fear. It's never easy. It takes serious courage to face up to the things that you're afraid of. It also takes bravery to admit it!

I am very afraid of tarantulas, and I wouldn't touch one of those hairy spiders only for some serious cash. I am also afraid of hights, but this one I think all of us enharited from our ancestors, so nothing special about this one. Another fear that I have, and am not very proud of is the fear to talk to people that I don't know, especially girls that I meet for the first time and I like.

There are plenty of things I don't like but I've learned to focus on what I DO like. If a person wants to overcome fear they can focus on COURAGE. If you focus on courage your fears disappear the same way darkness disappears when you turn on a light.

I hate hate hate roaches. We get really big one that fly! (some people call them waterbug but I say they are giant flying cockroaches) Just thinking about them creeps me out. I'm also afrais of running into rattle snakes. They are common here and highly venomous But I like turkeys!
