Healthy cake? It's like looking for the fountain of youth

I have been experimenting in the kitchen since a 40 pound weight loss to make healthier cakes. I'm trying applesauce, pumpkin, black beans and such. I'm substituting all sugar, half sugar with Splenda or Swerve (Erythritol). I sometimes have as many as 4 types of sugar/sweeteners or moist-makers per recipe. Have you learned something that can help me regain my lost youth? Can I have my cake and eating it, too?

Because I had high blood pressure my doctor gave me a recipe for a cake, her recipe was to soak bran, chopped apricots, sultanas overnight in low fat milk and then the next day add a little flour and bake for 45mins but I didn't think I would eat much of it because it was very bland so I added so I added crystalized ginger pieces, ginger ownder, vanilla and when it came out of the oven I sprinkkled it with cinamon... when I went back to the doctors a few months later she was shocked how much my blood pressure had gone down, she took the credit for her cake but I give the credit to the ginger and cinnamon which to me are miracle ingredients, they are good thing to add to anything.

What a great idea! I already eat 1/2 tsp cinnamon per day in my coffee as Prevention magazine says it can prevent diabetes. Ginger it is!

I have been using just a small amount of cinnamon in my cereal lately but often, and the past few or so months it does seem like my blood pressure is more down than it has been in months.

I saw this program on TV where they go to restaurants and try out their food. They featured one vegan restaurant who doesn't use any dairy products on their food. And they have chocolate cake prepared. The host says it's as good as the regular choocolate cake. Although they take out the egg and the butter, it's still high in sugar. So I guess you're right.

Yeah, once you decide to give up sugar AND fat it doesn't leave you anyplace to hide! The low-carbers eat a LOT of fat if you check out the Atkins bars, etc. I knew I had to give up both to lose weight because my sugar always had fat attached. I love my cake and ice cream! You might like my blog sweetfatlies.com if you are interested in the Vegan and other healthy food secrets. Though, everyone has their own idea of what's "healthy".

I had been doing that also for awhile, and using stuff like Truvia (zero calorie natural sugar substitute), applesauce, pumpkin, etc. and even thinking of using the black beans in the chocolate brownies, too. I don't have much nerve to use the beans yet, I dunno if they will work out. I'd rather use the ones I have in a veggie burger, once I get around to that. Yes, you can have all the cake you want if you substitute the right ingredients!

You can also get healthy cake but from a professional standpoint there are a few more problems. First would be would other people buy it second is how the flavors would be and lastly would be how one would be able to make a profit off of it. Would you buy a healthier cake at a bakery and what would it need to be like ?
