Union Membership did you have a vote?

I was watching a TV commercial where two men were talking about their Union. One man said don't blame me I never got to vote on joining. It made me think between my wife and I we belonged to about 6 different Unions in our careers and never once did we get to vote on weather to belong or not. In talking to other people non of them got to vote. I ask this question how many people who are union members got to vote on joining or not joining the Union you belong to?
