Getting The Writing Motor Going....

Lately as I sit at my computer developing article ideas or fullfilling articles needs for clients, I have to find a way to trigger the writing juices. Of course sometimes, it simply takes a cup of coffee to get that bit of juice flowing but, thee are days, when it takes a little more motivation and a little more word knowledge to help the trains start to chug down the lines of sentence structure. One way to help with my vocabulary and sentence structure is to play word games. I wondered around the web for quite some time to find just the right games to play to help me get the flow going. One way is to play scrabble. I will set up a game as I am working on an article. If I find that I'm not quite sure which avenue to take with a paragraph on a particular subject, I step to a game of scrabble to give my mind a little break from the subject matter. When doing this, I have noticed that certain brain stresses release and I am able to then refocus and continue on. It really helps with the pressure and keeps me on track with my writing. Other games that I have found to be helpful are; Word Whomp, Word Majong, Tumble Bees, Word-Up, Boggle.... You name it, if it involves building and creating words or finding words, I'm sure that I've added it to my mental word break. It is amazing how each of us as writers, find different ways to keep the writing juices flowing and keep our abilities alive and well.

I totally agree with you about word games. Playing games on Pogo has helped me considerably. I don't write because I don't have the confidence to dig into what I think would be a good story and then try to share or sell the story. My life has been interesting and one day I would like to share the feelings of an adopted child, living in the midwest who was able to locate her biological family. Reunions are interesting!

LOL, that's where I tend to play... If you are ever up for a game send me a message here and I'll message back with my call sign. If you decide to slowly get back into writing there are some great sites to help you. One site that I highly recommend is Wow- Women on Writing. They are a great source on many levels. I actually wrote a blog for them for a little while.

It's been awhile since I've played on Pogo. I do like the site but lost interest when they pulled the jackpots. Thanks for mentioning Wow. I will have to check it out.

carol, you are welcome. I like to help out my fellow writers. :) We have to stick together. There is a huge world out there and we all are tackling certain aspects of it. I lost interest in Pogo for a while, but with all the writing that I have been up to, its nice to have a little distraction once in a while.

Hi Chulce, actually I find that reading lousy articles is a great trigger too. I mean, when we read articles that are really too badly written, we definitely feel that we can do better. This desire, plus the anger of reading such lousy articles, serves to motivate us as well. Perhaps our emotions play a part too. When we are angry at something, we find that words flow.

I have to agree with you on that one. I have come across quite a few recently. Makes me scratch my head in wonder. How the heck did the author get it published and why the heck didn't the person moderating the writing site pick up on it.

This is interesting. I never thought of playing games to stimulate my mind. I've been writing part-time. Probably, this is the reason why I'm always tempted to do other things. However, for those who write full-time, they have enough stimuli to push them to write everyday. I'll try your advice. Meanwhile, for me I just visit mylot and I ragain my focus. In here I get a lot of topics to write about. By the way, do you play these games online?

I have to agree, this site is a great source of ideas. However, you have to be careful at times. I like to use this site to work on sentence structure and hopefully helping those who don't speak English well, get a better understanding and grasp of the language.

The gaming site that I go to is called pogo. The main game that I play is scrabble. However, there are a lot of other word games that you can also play on the website as well. Its just a matter of figuring out which one will work with you to begin with. Good Luck!
