It is and it is not. Looking at it from a social point of view since it helps distributing private property around, since it makes heirs apparent and makes getting taxes easier. However from an individual point of view, getting married is just a paper, nothing really should change in the way the relationship is kept. Although I have heard some people say that making it an obligation actually makes it worse because it makes it less interesting, and more boring by limiting the innovation needed to keep the more easily breakable relationships. On the other hand involving the law on it make the relationship harder to dissipate, which forces misery on people who don't really love each other, but cannot be bothered to go through the legalities of a divorce. Of course, it might also offer some kind of security, but being married with someone who doesn't love you and cannot leave is just a disaster waiting to happen. So personally, I would say its more of a hassle than important, but that's just me :).
