A bad way to be let go

I wanted to share this quick story with you because after I heard it, I thought WOW! I can't believe that!. This guy I work with at my main company had another job that he was recently let go from. It was a restaurant chain who's owner had recently been involved in a DWI/drug scandal a few months back. Instead of letting anyone know that they were closing that location, one day they put a sign up on the door, after scheduling people for that day, saying, "We're sorry, we are closed due to financial reasons". And THAT is how their dozens of employees at that location found out that they were jobless! How ridiculous and slimey is that! I was appalled that any company would do that to their employees. The guy I work with said that it's probably because they didn't want anyone to quit before hand. But to not give notice? That seems like it should be illegal. Have you ever had this happen to you? Or have you ever gotten 'let go' in a really (similar) shady way?

I've heard of that happening before. Businesses just close up overnight, and employees and/or customers are left without jobs, without pre-ordered merchandise (such as wedding dresses). Given that the owner in this case has already been involved in committing a crime, it really isn't surprising that this guy would do that to these employees. He has already demonstrated a disregard for other people in general, why would he treat his employees any better?

That's an aweful way to let employees go! I personally don't have any shady experience like this. In my last job, I did have one supplier that suddenly closed their doors. I'm not sure if employees were caught unaware, but we, as a customer didn't expect it. The bank locked their doors which meant we couldn't get all the stuff that they made, that we already paid for.

That is really sad. I don't know if you would consider this shady, but both my husband and I were let go by our bosses when our bosses stopped calling us in. Mine happened right after we moved, back in '95. After we moved, I was the one that always called my job to see if I could get any hours in. And they always gave me some. However, after the move they never once called me to see if I could come in to work. Eventually I gave up and stopped calling them too. My husband's story was a little different. He was told that there was a slow down in work, which I don't doubt was true. It was in the middle of this economy, after all. However, he was told, or rather given notice, that "things would be picking up", "thanks for staying with us", yadda yadda yadda. After months of not hearing anything from his job and us waiting it out the next thing we know his boss shuts off my husband's cell phone. There was no other notice. So, that was the end of that.

I have not only had this happen to me but it happened many times. I worked in the Real Estate lending business, most workers were on commission but I was on salary. Do to the ups and downs in this business we were lucky if they didn't just move everything out over night and locked the doors. It gets to where you just know that's part of the business and accept it. It did pay pretty well while the business was open.

In general, the catering business is amongst the worst for compensation, even in the UK. There are hardly any contracts and people can be put out overnight.

wow... I think the can do class action and sue the company because the employees has right to know their situation. This is just ridicules. I never see something like this before.

This is illegal and the employees can seek legal action from government agencies that handles this matter. I haven't been in such situation although I lost one of my good job due to crisis years ago. The company closed but we are paid, thou, we lost some of the other benefits.

That is really quite illegal I think. All of a sudden you are jobless without any valid reason and just a inconsiderate reason like that. Why is there employers who just do anything they want to employees like us.Legal action should take over regarding this kind of matter.
