The elementary children got out of school early today. I knew that my granddaughter would want to stay on the playground to play with friends. There's all kinds of fun equipment to play on - tunnels, slide in tunnel, wall climbing (only 4 ft tall), wobbly bridge, monkey bars, ladders, etc. We stayed there for 3 hours. Then we went to her favorite park and stayed for 2 hours. The park has what her school has only bigger and like 6 times as much equipment to play on. She played for a total of 5 hours. I don't know how she does it! She just goes from the time she wakes up till she goes to bed. I want some of that energy. When I told her it was time to go home she wanted to go back to the school playground. I don't get on the equipment with her. I used to play on it with our boys when they were young, but I was younger also.

I wish I had her childhood, I mean getting all these hours of playtime in the park. How I envy her. I don't think I was that energetic before but I know most kids are. It has something to do with their anatomy or something. It's a God-given gift and I believe it is just right to let them spend it on playgrounds and other kids stuff. Just make sure the environment is safe, child-friendly and most of all make sure that the kid gets cleaned up after all the playing. You know the germs they could have gathered from those places. The last thing we want is to have sick children.

It's a carefree life to be 5 yrs old! She can sit and play with toys or her dollhouse, but she loves to be outside. It doesn't matter how cold or how hot.

Carefree life indeed. What I wouldn't give to relive those days. I guess that's just how she loves it. It's nice to know you give her that opportunity.

yup, my oldest daughter was like that when she was little. she didnt learn to walk first, she learned to run. i wish i could say she still has that energy but as a teen, she tends to be on the lazy side.

Yeah, we raised 2 boys so I know what you mean (about being on the lazy side when a teen)!

thats how children are. sadly, we dont stay that way nor have that part come back to us when we get older. some childish things return but some dont. also, with some kids it takes some manipulating to slow them down it seems.

Yeah, I have to bribe her sometimes! As long as she has friends, or any kids to play with she would be outside all day.

I've also wondered where kids get their energy. It seems that they have some secret stash that they could just draw on to whenever they want to play or something. I had the same experience with my son. When he was in preschool, one main reason he loves to go to school is because he could play in the school's playground after, and with his classmates, kids he knew :) His in his second grade now but it seems the playground was replaced by virtual reality. Although he still plays after classes, he's also excited to go home since he could play his computer games.

She loves to play computer games also. We have a laptop and a desktop computer. She always wants to use the computer that I'm on!

Children get their energy from curiosity and enthusiasm. Their bodies digest food better and spend calories much better. Play is fun to them and the feel good factor pushes the feeling of sore muscles into the background. Bet your granddaughter was none for the worse the next morning. There are chemical and psychological reasons too. Studies have shown that if a child were to exercise without the fun, as in a medical facility, without the fun factor, it would feel pain, not felt if it were to play in a more strenuous manner, for a longer time. Psychologically, children have tensions but not big or important enough for them, to forget when having fun. Exercise on the other hand also produces chemicals which relive mental stress. So this whole play time is a win-win for them, physically and mentally. I should thank you on your granddaughter's behalf for letting her have fun outdoors rather than in front of TV or a Video console. Better an energizer bunny than a couch potato.

Well, I figure if she wants to play outside she must have a lot of energy. So it's better to release it outside than to be confined inside. Not much to do inside and sometimes bottled up energy can turn into complaining and being angry cause there's nothing to do. Like you said, it relieves mental stress. And thank you for the compliment!

I think toddlers can play all day and night if they had to, they can do with little sleep sometimes, ey? You have a lucky one with so much energy and she will be a healthy and normal adult someday. God bless you and her.

I was like that when i was a kid too. When I was a kid, I am full of optimism and I always get delight in so many things even for the grown-ups, there's nothing to be happy about it. So i can understand the kids. I used to love to go to many different places even when my parents were already telling me they want to go home, I still wanted to play. Let the kids play because they will surely miss that when they grow old.

Parks are a godsend for active children. I remember when mine used to be little and we went almost every other day to the local park. I used to get on the equipment with them too...I might still try a little of that when my grand daughter arrives but it will be a couple of years before she will be able to play there...I might change my mind by then. I know I will still love to take her though.

If only we could suck a little of that energy up to keep up with them! My second and fourth daughter is like that they just keep going until you stop them. The second they sit though they are out. I want to go spend the day with you though two parks and playing all day your a cool Gram! Mine would have had me doing chores
