My cable provider furnished a wifi router ; the router is connected to the cable splitter, and the computer to the router. I have just tried to connect directly, and it does not work for me -- the computer does not find the network --, but I used a crossover ethernet cable and an adapter, and I think it is not the right cable, or there is some firmware needed in the router. I continue my investigations...

I would call the cable company and have them check to see if the signal is getting to the modem. If it is, then the problem is probably with the ethernet cable. If you change that out and it still doesn't work, you might have to get a cable technician to either walk you through the first connection, or come to your home and fix it.

It should work. Ethernet Cable is plug and play as compared to USB modem.
I believe your cable is faulty. Change a new one, probably at least a Code 5 or a Code 6, higher end cable to try.
If it does not work, maybe your modem is faulty. Switch it off and on again, observe the LEDs on the indicators whether it is functioning correctly.
If not check with your service provider or the hardware vendor.
Cheers.

If your cable internet has no modem, you can't directly connect to the internet. But if your cable internet is direct connection in a modem no need for it but configure first your laptop or any computer to make the internet being connected. Just as the provider in that cable internet to configure it first before using their service

Have you connected the modem directly to the ethernet card on your PC with a RJ45 cable? If so, at least you should be able to access the web configuration interface of the modem or ping it. Check that first to see if you have connected it properly or the cable is in good shape.
Also, verify the IP configuration of your network card. Have it in automatic or with a fixed local IP? In the latter case, check that you have the modem as the network gateway.
But if nothing solves it, you should call your ISP and have them verify the connection, maybe the service is not working at all, no matter what you do on your side.
