What determines the level of an interest group?

I have seen that different interest group(eg: mylot, people,life etc) in mylot have different level.
And in these interest group of a particular level, different people have different level.
What does it mean? Is it proportional to the number of users in a group?
Does it have any relationship with our earnings?
How can we raise our level in an interest group?

level shows show good you are in the interest
it increases when mylotter rates use positive
and when we get + our star increases and yeah our earning too compare to those with low star
I just don't think of it too much but sometimes when i fall down began to worry a bit
