I was curious about whether you can build your own DVR with your own, spare PC? I saw there is a TV capture card, an accessory that you can installed in your desktop, where it has input/output connected to the TV, or satellite or cable connector. I saw some people have this DVR to record their TV programs, but they purchased from the stores with very expensive price though. I was thinking, if I can install this TV capture card, and I can get an interface program, or a software to manage the recorded content from the satellite TV or cable, I won't need to wait in front of the TV all the time. I just wonder if anyone has such experience with their personal customized DVR, and what software do you use to manage the recorded content?

DVRs have disadvantages -- you have to pay for the privilege of using one, and you"re stuck with whatever capabilities the DVR you purchase happens to come with. I agree with you when you said that purchased DVRs are expensive. I have good news for you though. You can build your own DVR! You can watch it demonstrated at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiVMBq19U0I or read the how to build a DVR at http://www.hometrix.com/mtrix/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48&Itemid=82.
