Is it normal for a laptop to get very hot/warm?

Laptop Cpu Temperature using Speedfan software - A screenshot of Speedfan test I took minutes ago.

 Cpu Usage: 34.1%

 Gpu: 51c
HD0: 41c - the only one that is marked OK. The rest had burning/fire indicators beside them.
 Temp1: 64c
 Core0: 64c
 Core1: 65c

Good day mylotters. I have a laptop which is 6 months old now. Although I'm not into gaming anymore nowadays, I feel its palm rest getting hot already which made me wonder what exactly is this Asus "Ice Cool Technology" stands for? Here are the specs of my laptop: -Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz -2gb Ram -64bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS -NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 520M - and comes with a feature " IceCool - keeps palm rest cool" Then after using this Speedfan software for detecting cpu temperature, I got the following results: Cpu Usage: 34.1% Gpu: 51c HD0: 41c - the only one that is marked OK. The rest had burning/fire indicators beside them. Temp1: 64c Core0: 64c Core1: 65c I tried asking help from Asus online support but only instructed me to update bios. After the update, still the heat exists that my hands are getting immune already. They didn't even gave me further explanations about the screenshot I attached. So, I'm here to ask among fellow mylotters if this is normal for a laptop to have such temperatures. Thanks and happy mylotting everyone!

yes i think in some cases it can be normal such as depending from hardware and producer as well, asus in your case,so normally to improve your temperature in a pc you should upgrade your spoiler and sure you that your cooling system inside it is a quality ones...so normally for desktop this work is fine and normal for laptop not because for warranty you can't open the case of your pc...so if you updated the bios and nothing change you can notice which application give you this problem and control your laptop spoiler is free annd nothing can make difficulties for the fresh air changement..

Hello Guys. I am a newbie here in MyLot. Anyway, It appears that your CPU temp is really high. Normally CPU temp of a laptop should range from 40 to 50 degrees Celsius with a max of 65 degrees Celsius and about your model, I have checked that the Asus Icecool Technology should bring down the temp so I think this is not normal from my point of view. Well as a tech what I could recommend is try to get a cooling pad, second one possible reason why this is getting hot is the battery, and one last thing since it is still less than a year try to get in touch with the store or Asus technical support, I think it is still under warranty and ask them what you should do or you need it to be serviced. I would not recommend you to do anything physically since this will probably void your warranty. Well this is just my recommendation as a technician... hope it helps... thanks... :D

Thank you so much for giving me very informative answers! I'm glad I was able to interact with a technician here. It really convinced me to go and find an Asus branch as soon as possible! By the way, my battery was okay. I stuck it out and made my laptop like a desktop. Also, I hope to consult with a technician with enough knowledge about this, since most technicians nowadays in our place are sometimes just blabbing and giving wrong ideas to the customer because they think customers always complain and being too meticulous about their unit. (I felt that because I have worked in a PC shop before) Good luck to me, and thanks to you! By the way, welcome to mylot community! :-)

You are most welcome... yeah customers sometimes complain too much... I understand that, been on that kind of situation before... Anyway, you just need to let them know, who knows about the product... let me know if you need any thing else, I would be glad to answer in the best of my knowledge... :D

But what is the problem exactly? Does it have problems with over-temperature often or just curiosity? Laptops have a common problem with temperature, they really get hot too easy and many times to the point of producing some damage if keeps uncontrolled. But your temperatures are quite normal at those values, you still have nothing to worry really if you can keep it under control. A bios update is totally useless and changes nothing about temperature. To give you an idea, I have a laptop right not and my temperatures when doing something "soft" like browsing are around 60 degrees, but can rise to 70 or more when gaming, and the machine powers itself off at 90, that's the really troublesome point, so while keeping far from it you should be fine.

Ahh yes! I was thinking of that too. :-( Some sort of a joke to their customers! But not too funny. Oh okay, actually I was getting used to it. Thank you thank you. I only knew that shutdown thing was a technique/cpu protection. :-)

The problem is the palm rest's are hot. Since I am just a newbie to laptops, I asked the question if the temperatures were still in normal ranges. Thus, I have no idea if its "over-temperature". It wasn't due to curiosity, I was really concerned about the hotness because its absorbing in my skin. And to answer the idea you have given, according to a technician here, 60 degrees-70 is not normal for my unit which is different from yours since we have different specs/hardware's. There was this "Ice Cool Technology" (supposed to keep my palms cool) sticker in my lappy which I am wondering if still working. Thank you for answering my question. I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this battle. :-)

I bet that "Ice Cool Technology" is just a marketing trick , a fancy name for a bigger cooler or something that doesn't dramatically changes anything. In every notebook I use, both mine and at work, to some point it heats somewhat from the sides and in some parts of keyboard, particularly after some use and when doing some heavy work. I've learned that the real alarm for over-temperature is when it powers it off by itself out of nothing (it's a protection all modern CPUs have). When that triggers, you've got a problem. The 60 degrees is just a common, conservative warning typically for desktop boxes. Those have way more refrigeration than a laptop, and when reaching there means they have a problem. The limited space of laptops means that they easily reach such values.

Its normal for laptops to get warm of course. My Toshiba laptop always heat up whan I use it for a long time. Nothing to worry though, but I suggest you try to cool it down. What I do is a stay in a cool place, probably air-conditioned room or with fan. But the best would be to but a laptop fan for your unit.

Thank you, bhonti! I thought there was a problem with this heat temperature. And also, we don't have aircon in our house, and our place is hot especially that summer is approaching so I think I understand it now. I do have a cooler too, but the fan speed is so slow. But somehow, I miss those first few months when my laptop used to have the coolest palm rest. :-(

No do not use cleaning agent!!! Your laptop will surely get damaged if you do that. Just brush the dust off. Or better yet, ask for a professional's help or go to their service center to be safe.

Hello my friend!!?? How are you?? Oh! so sad!! :( you have to ask the expert about that problem.. don't do anything if your not sure if it really works.. okay? your lappy is just a months old.. maybe You have to bring it back to where you purchase it so they can solve your problem.. I think it is still under warranty .. what you think???

Yay! Hello no_ming! I'm doing fine. Yes, it is still under warranty but the laptop was bought in Manila that's why I could not easily send it to them now. So, I'm currently busy looking for some Asus branches here in our place and I do hope I find one that will assist me with this problem; somehow I could make use of this warranty :-) (Hehe) Have a nice day and study well! :-*

19 Mar 12
my problem also same with you, i ask my friend for solution, my friend ask me to open my laptop cashing and clean the fan inside my laptop. the heat cause by dust inside your laptop. so you must clean it.

19 Mar 12
Really? Do you think it could be the dusts inside that made it hot? But my laptop is still months old. I will try to reach some Asus branches here in our place(i'm hoping there is any) so that I could have it fixed by some personnel and besides, it's still under warranty.
19 Mar 12
Yeah you must clean your exhaust fun because the dust inside is blocking and preventing the heat to come out from it and that's make the laptop very hot. Check your exhaust fun if its still working when your using your laptop or if their still air going out from it. You can hear if your exhaust fan is still running.
19 Mar 12
Your laptop is still in warranty, so go to the store where you bought it let them check it and ask for advice about it because your warranty will be void if you yourself or you let other open it for you.

i think this is normal. it happens to mine too. that is why there is a fan for that in the market that you can put under the laptop so it doesn't get so hot. it is annoying though and also i don't have that fan

Good to know I am not alone here! I have a cooling fan under it but seems like not to be doing any cooling at all, just adds noise to the environment. Well I totally agree, its kind of annoying especially when your hands came in cold, then you touch your laptop you feel its really hot and after minutes of using, your hands are hot too.

Very true, feels like were putting our hands on top of a burning surface. I will do let it check by a Technician. I hope they could really solve this heat problem.
19 Mar 12
Yes i believe it's quite normal in some conditions as my laptop in this moment is burning me :D ,but that program you used that showed these signs seems good and working so the best answer is to go to a specialist and he will tell you for sure.

I don't play games anymore. I used gamebooster too before but not anymore now because I don't play those online games as I am presently busy with finding ways to be employed. And also, my fan? I think its spinning well, its just that the laptop palm rest is getting hot. I am planning to overclock my laptop, but no idea how will it turn out.

it is normal for a laptop to get hot, but very hot will damaged the laptop. to prevent from over heating don't place your laptop in a surface like beds because the heat air produce can't escape, so its better to place it under an exhaust fan table. my laptop does not overheat even if i place it in my bed because the exhaust fan is place in the side and not underneath.
