I am sure some of you have gone through being laid off from work at one time or another. On Friday, I was given notice that I was being laid off due to Corporate Restructuring? How do you find another job when your older? Starting at the bottom of the ladder again with next to no pay again. What do you suggest to move on??

Then perhaps it is the right time to start your own business. I believe a company will not lay off employees without give some severance pay. You can use that money to build a small business first. There are lots of success stories from a people who start their business after being laid off. Or I believe you can try to apply for another jobs. Your working experience is something that younger people may don't have. Either way, just don't give up.

That's a very good advice, to never ever give up. When one window closes down, another one opens. Maybe that new window is your own business. By the way, how old is he/she now?

Thanks very good advice however the start up for a new business would be costly and having a family would make it difficult. I am in my mid-40's/

The one thing that you can hold on to is your generation will give you an actual heads up in todays market. Now I know there is a lot of competition out there and jobs are not easy to find but companies are realizing more and more that the work ethics of older people are actually a plus. The younger generation often expects things to be handed to them and will express their goals but very rarely do they express what they will do to reach them. I would suggest that you keep your head up and don't focus on the age thing...focus on your work ethics and what you have to offer a company. Take care and good luck!

See there! You are going to be just fine. Nothing like good work ethic, experience, plus a wonderful letter of recommendation to to shoot you right up the consideration list!

Thank you JeninTn. I have good skills to offer, and I know that I am a steady hard working without fail, and have a great set of references who are more than willing to pass along a good reference. Even the President of the company that laid me off is willing to speak to potential employers.

I think you've got mostly good advice so far. It depends on what you want to do, though. Not everyone is cut out to own their own business or work for themselves. If you want to and have some skill that will pay, by all means, give it a try, but if you don't want to, start looking for a job right away. Make looking for a job your job. Get up, get dressed, get breakfast and get busy. Don't allow yourself to waste time or energy doing nothing or worrying or feeling sorry for yourself. Just get up and do what needs to be done. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

I have been getting up in the morning taking the kids to school and doing my old working routine just trying to keep up with the routine. I have started looking for a job and have had a few interviews but in sales and thats not where my expertise is.

It is more of a challenge for an older one to find suitable employment. But if you keep looking I'm sure something will turn up. Make your CV and start spreading the word. If you really need a job, take something and then keep on looking for something better. All the best!

When you have done and are doing all you can, then the rest is in God's hands. I do hope that something turns up.

Thank you, I bring up the fact that I am unemployed everywhere I go and I keep talking about it to whoever will listen, I even have resumes in my car to bring with me if I need them at any given time.

If you have a lot of work experience and qualifications have you thought about perhaps opening up a consulting company? You could also use sites like Linkedin and try and network with the right people to get in.

Never thought of that, maybe a virtual assistant idea which would tie in the marketing and still have work coming in if I could get it off the ground. Thanks!

I feel for you my friend because I've been there. I was laid off from a couple of jobs due to restructuring of the company, It sucked because I really liked those jobs. It is hard to find something else , the older you get too. GOOD LUCK, MY LOT, FRIEND!

hi glitznglitter do you have a hobby or a knack for making creating things to sell? some women have started their own businesses just creating something they have a knack for, of course for awhile I imagine you will have to find another job even part time but you have experience which the yo nger ones do not have, any really smart employer should opt for the experienced person first not the kid college grad with no experience at all. Also networking for all you can as it really works.say you have a friend who works in the same thing you work in and she knows the boss really w ell, she might put in a good word for you or a friend has a friend who owns a company thats looking for people like you.so contact all your old friends and people you know who might have leads on jobs like you want or need. Also think abou setting up your own bsiness too.

Thanks Hatley, I do some crafting, but not enough to make a business out of it. I have been spreading the word trying to get the word out to everyone about my lay off and that I am looking for work. Even my dentist is looking for me.......

I found the easiest way to get a job was to start with a temporary agency. This does a couple of things. One, it proves to the company that you are a real worker as long as you go in with the attitude of doing all you've been asked, plus asking for more. And, two, it lets you know what type of company you would be working in. Good luck.
