Hello there guys, My gadget discussion got me thinking about this matter, If you were to choose and item between a powerful SLR and a compact tough digital camera which will you choose? Both have there pros and cons SLR pros they can really take beautiful shots, can really get pictures from great distances and is really for pro shooting. Cons it is to big, in my country there is a chance that it will catch peoples attention. DIgital camera pros, Compact, has kinds that are shock resistant and water resistant, really you can just put it in your pocket. Cons most are not set up for great distances resolution is limited compared to slr. So which will it be?

Most definitly the DSLR. The more expensive ones are quite water resistent and if you want to dive, you can get waterproof housing for some of them. Plus you get a much wider variety in lenses for DSLRs. For some compact cameras you can get extensions for wide-angle, macro etc, but it won't be quite the same as a seperate lens.

I've got a small camera but I find that as I've become used to a max ISO with 12600 with my DSLR (usually no use for flash) the small camera very often get left at home. The small camera is getting old though, I've been considering getting a new one or getting mobile phone with a good camera (but they're quite expensive).

Hey there torrun, Great thinking my friend why not just have a phone that has great camera capabilities right then you have one for two, a phone and a camera that really takes nice pictures, well if that happens well maybe will just have to turn to Nokia at the moment since they are the one launching a 40mp kinda camera this year or heck i don't know maybe they already did I'll research on that one. Thanks for the comment.

Hey there Torrun, Wow you really have good knowledge about this stuff, i don't since i don't have one and dont have any research material on them but I would like to buy one when i have enough money, I really would like to have a great camera like the slr but i think i would prefer to use them per occasion. Small one compact for hassle free shots in social gatherings and the big for great views on vcations and outdoor trips. Thanks for the comment, your smart!

SLR definitely is for every photography enthusiasts as the lenses are really well-built and adjustable on the focus, aperture and speed. CDC are great for snap pictures, ease of use and light on the pocket, and yes you're right about the resolution being par below of an SLR.

I had a nikon SLR, but sold it. I got a sony compact digital camer, i sold it too. I am using my Samsung HD 8910 phone camera with 8 mb pixel resolution, and it really takes great pictures and videos too. Very handy, and it is more shoot and upload to the net directly.

I'm with yanzalong as far as budget is concerned. I cannot justify spending thousands of dollars on a high-end SLR unless it was paying for itself. I do not work as a professional photographer, although I sell microstock, so I cannot justify spending that kind of money. My point-&-shoots have manual controls, so, at least if I choose to experiment, I have some control on settings, but my proficiency would still be lacking when using the more complicated SLR. I hike and love outdoor adventures and taking pictures of it all, so slugging along a bulky camera on and off-trail is really not a viable option. Compact? Shock resistant? Water resistant? That's just what the doctor ordered for those extreme backcountry bushwhacks!

Heyoh Ladeboheme, Well, im with you on that one, about the part were you would rather have a compact one when on hiking trails or really going pretty much covering the forest. No argument there my friend just point and shot and pocket it then you are good to go. For me on the other hand if i am really going to a place for the scenery or on a vacation i guess i will prefer a high end slr for the quality of the shot and yepp i will burn the money, i guess everybody is different right. Anyway thanks for the comment man, good one.

Personally i don fancy all the taking pictures equipment , hence using the digital camera in the handphone is sufficient running from 3M to 5Mega pix is more than enought, the only thing is the zooming is limited, lighting is normal while the convenient is good. If the person has a high end hobbies of taking pictures everywhere then i guess a normal end SLR is better, like zooming on a bird on a tree and such ,talking fast objects and colour intense pix then better SLR DLR camera is good according to budget. There are many camera forum out there to guide the new buyer.

hey there kukueye, I think so too, a phone is good enough for taking pics but i guess with maybe 3 to for more pixels added in, that would be great, for me i still would prefer a digital camera if i have it then why not use it right? For small gatherings or parties, handy is really the way to go and yeah if you really are a serious shooter then better be slr dlr. If the budget permits. And yep alot of techy magazines and websites are out there for support for new people interested in this techy things. Thanks for the comment kukueye.

Hi there, Cherish i hope your super okay today, well i think were on the same page on this one though if i really did have the cash I'll get both types of cameras but then again I am limited with what my hard work will lead me and I guess i will be opting to buy the slr. But then again if i can find a much suitable kinda rugged tough digital camera then maybe id still change my mind but again i am for the slr. Thanks for the comment dear cherish, have a blast lotting today.

If I had to pick one I would go with the DSLR with a zoom lens at least a 28-200. I currently have two basic cameras that I use. One is a DSLR the Canon 50D and a Tamron 18-270 zoom lens and a Canon G12. What I would say about the Canon G12 is that is is almost like a DSLR except you can't change lens. In some situations it takes better pictures that my D50. I decided years ago that it was important that I have at least two cameras for different situations. I am even considering buying a third camera after seeing what my son has. He has a Canon ELPH 300 and it takes almost as good of general photos as my 50D or my G12 and it cost a lot less. The best thing is it is smaller than a smart phones and is easily carried in your pocket. It could be a camera that you carry with you every day and never notice you have it in your pocket.

For me it depend on where I will go. I like SLR camera for long shots and for a nice subject. Going on vacation I prefer to bring SLR for shooting for long way views. I used Digicam for short distance shooting and it easy to handle any where you can go. For parties and everyday activities I prefer Digicam.

Hi there lyn, Well i think you are loaded, i mean you have both digital and slr, i guess nowadays people do have that set of cameras, well for me that is the perfect ways to use your camera there are just specific moments that you will need those cameras for particular events and locations right, great thinking there lyn. Take care now.

Hi there, I love cameras. To me, I love a high end one but have to choose compact one due to limited budget. I don't know when my dream will come true to buy the best one. Mine is now only compact camera but it suits me right, bro, at least for the time being.

Hey there bro, Well that is just the hassle right my fiend, i think that it is right that you just utilize what you have, me i have a very old digital camera it is 5 megapixel and really has poor quality, it doesn't have a rechargeable Li-ion battery so i just buy rechargeable AA batteries. Well for this year i swear i will get either a very cheap slr or a nice tough looking digital camera. Thanks for the comment man, happy lotting to you.

Hi deodavid! I'm and owner of both DSLR and digital point-and-shoot cams. I agree that both have pros and cons. If I'd be asked to choose between the two, I'd say it depends on the situation. For moments that I know it'll be inconvenient to carry around a DSLR, then I'd take my point-and-shoot. If I need better resolutions (especially when shooting sports), then I'll bring my DSLR with me. There are also times that I bring both with me, just in case there are some rush photo ops, those times that I won't have the chance of adjusting my DSLR or when we ask another person (in a restaurant for example, asking the service crew to take the shot) to take our group picture, at least the point-and-shoot comes handy. It really depends on the situation, the needs. =)

Tough part of DSLR is being unable to take a group shot with yourself included in the picture. Unless having it mounted on a tripod and set it on timer or using a remote trigger. XD

Hey there chan2, well i believe we both agree that each has its own uses at particular situations well at least we both get the point of needing two things that will serve different purposes, thanks for sharing your opinion and experience in these two.

Well i think that would be really too much work bringing a big camera along and add a tiny remote and a bulky tripod, well anyway i think most camera makers are trying to adopt the quality of SLR to tinier cameras but i think it will really take awhile before small cameras can master the capabilities of the massive dslr's.

Well for me i think i will settle more likely on a compact one since it is easier to carry and less of a hassle to in trip that you have to minimize carry things.
